2010 FISHING DETAILS AND PRICES
Trout Fishing
With the majority of the fishing returns completed for 2009 final results show that 2009 was generally a very successful season with excellent catches from Blagdon and Barrows and reasonable catches from Chew Valley. The Barrow Tanks produced their second best ever result with over 8,000 fish taken at an average weight of 1.09. Blagdon also fared well with a catch of more than 17,000 averaging 2.06. Chew fished very well early on but was disappointing after July but still returned 18,000 plus fish.
The 2010 trout fishing season will commence on Tuesday 16th March at Chew Valley and Barrows with a special Season Permit holders day on Monday 15th March. Blagdon will begin one week later on Tuesday 23rd with their special day for Season permits on Monday 22nd. As previously the season will end for boat fishing at the end of October whilst bank anglers can continue to fish until 30th November. Litton will remain open throughout the year.
Boat permit prices at Chew Valley and Blagdon will increase by 50p per rod. Bank permits at Blagdon and Barrows will increase by the same amount with season permits increasing by around 2.0%. Bank and Season permits at Chew will remain the same price as 2009. Any angler who purchased a Chew Valley season permit last year will qualify for a discount off any 2010 season permit.
2010 prices (per rod)
Boats; Chew Valley £32.50, Blagdon £27.00, Litton £60.00
Bank; Chew Valley £15.50, Blagdon £18.00, Barrows £13.50
Season Permits; All Waters £635.00, Chew & Barrows £520.00, Barrows £410.00.
After much debate and a season permit survey it has been decided that for next year Barrow 1 & 2 will become mouse free. This means that there will be no static sinking line fishing. With any line other than a floater the line must be retrieved constantly with the rod held.
To book early season boats send a letter application to Woodford Lodge to be received before 1st January.
Pike Fishing
Chew Valley is now acknowledged as the best pike fishing in the country. Demand far outweighs supply and for this reason there will be an extra boat fishing session in early October 2010. Dates for fishing are as follows;
February 1-7, 15-21, bank and boat.
October 4-9, boat only.
October 13-15, 18-21, 24-30, November 4-9 bank and boat.
November 14-19, 25-30 bank only.
Prices will increase for boat and bank permits.
Boat £30.00 per person & bank £15.00 per person.
The extra revenue generated by the increases will be used to supply extra trout stocks to the lake to offset the possible predation by the large number of pike present.
2010 Pike Bookings
To book pike fishing for 2010 letters should be sent to arrive at Woodford Lodge BEFORE 1st January. All those received will be placed in a draw in which the names will be drawn and one place allocated. When all names have been drawn once, all are replaced and drawn again and repeated until all the boats and bank places are reserved. Because of the very high numbers of fishermen applying to fish, it is difficult to give specific dates or consecutive days but we will do our best if that is the only opportunity to book. It also means that most anglers may only have one or at the most two dates offered. Boat fishing places cannot be reserved for anyone other than the applicant and their partner. We will not accept any telephone bookings until mid January after all the letter applications have been completed.
When the boat and bank places have been allocated, offer letters are sent out. Payment is required in advance. Dates offered are not transferrable and can only be used by the named person who books the fishing. Anglers are not permitted to transfer their boat/bank permits to other fishermen without obtaining Bristol Waters consent. Anyone attempting to do so will have their permit(s) withdrawn and will not be offered places in the future.
Please supply your full name and address with a day-time or mobile phone for our booking records with your application.

Phil Oakes was the lucky angler who landed the 6.12 fish.

Hello from Bristol Water At last we have some smiling faces at Chew Valley after a really good weeks result. The fish have begun to feed although it appears to be fish stocked several weeks ago rather than the most recent planting. Still, it has resulted in much better catches with plenty of fish coming from boat and bank. This week has also seen a few bigger fish being caught with the biggest fish of the season from Barrow 2, 5.05 rainbow to Harry Johnstone, and the second biggest of the year from the shore at Blagdon taken by Jeff Hirst (see picture).

Hi from Bristol Water Sorry for the omission of last weeks report. Here this week is one for a fortnight! Main story this week is the excellent sport at Blagdon and Litton and a couple of very large fish. It seems there is an explosion of corixa at Blagdon lake, a bit like the old days. With the weed dying back this valuable food source for the trout is having to try to find cover in the shallow waters and lake margins. But the trout are happy to follow them in to feast on this easy to catch insect. Anglers are saying that they are crushing hundreds of the water boatmen as they wade into the lake and it seems the trout are willing to take all sorts of patterns as they feed. Another good aspect of taking corixa feeders is that they feed throughout the dya in all conditions so don't worry if it's bright or calm, your catch rate will still be good. Litton is also having a great spell with both lakes producing. Bookings here are heavy but later in the month there are plenty of vacancies. Chew though remains difficult, not helped by the poor weather we've been experiencing. However the forecast for the next week is much better so things should start to improve there too. Attached are pictures of Roger Stenner with his 8.15 rainbow from Chew

and David Potter in a Blagdon boat with a fish of 7.04 Hope you can get to Blagdon to enjoy some cracking sport! Bob Handford
Litton 113 fish taken by 25 rods, average 4.5 per rod.

EVENING LEAGUE, FINAL MATCH.
The tenth and final contest of the Chew Valley Evening League took place on Saturday in a new format. This match was fished from 3 until 9pm, giving an extra couple of hours fishing. Although 22 anglers took part, only two of them, Martin Burgess and Mark Withyman, could be the overall winner but another five had the chance of getting into the prizes for a top four finish.
Fishing was not easy although there were plenty of fish around for the first half of the match. But they stopped feeding well before the finish time and there was no evening rise. Fish came mainly from Villice Bay and dries and nymphs seemed to be the best patterns. Few fish fell to pulled lures. For this match the limit had been set at eight fish but no-one managed to take their full basket. Seven was the best catch and a total of 50 fish were taken.

Results for the tenth match were: Mark Withyman 7 fish 13.04, Tony George 7 - 11.06, Dave Drake 6 - 10.03, Jay Curry 5 - 9.00, Andy Beattie 3 - 5.13, Paul Crook 3 - 5.06, Mark Stevens 3 - 5.05, Chris Homeyard 3 – 5.01, Martin Burgess 2 – 4.09 and John Gumbleton 3 – 4.08.
In the end the exciting finish hoped for faded as Mark Withyman easily won with Martin only taking two fish. But the fight for the minor places was a little more interesting. Ben Keedwell, John Bowen and Mark Stevens failed to improve their placings and third spot was taken by Andy Beattie with Tony George coming fourth in his first ever entry to the league.
At the presentation supper the prizes of the Champions Trophy, money prizes for the top four and free boats to contest winners were given out by Bob Handford.
Final League Table:
Place Name Matches Points
1st MARK WITHYMAN 10 97
2nd Martin Burgess 10 93
3rd Andy Beattie 9 88
4th Tony George 10 85
5th Ben Keedwell 9 83
6th Mark Stevens 6 81
7th John Bowen 9 80
8th Dave Drake 8 77
9th Brin Woodsford 10 69
10th John Humphry 7 69
Mark Withyman has now been champion six out of the seven occasions that the league has been fished, an amazingly consistent feat of angling. Congratulations Mark!

CHEW VALLEY: The kinder weather has seen a terrific improvement in the fishing at Chew. Bank and boat anglers have enjoyed some fantastic sport with fish coming to may, methods and patterns and from most areas of the lake. Nunnery, Woodford, Walley and North Shore have all seen fish close in near the shore giving the bank fishermen plenty to fish for. Limit bags have come from all these areas mainly on bright lures fished fast or nymphs and buzzres fished very slowly. Boats have found fish in similar spots but when conditions have been favourable the main body of the lake and around the Island has been very productive with plenty of resident fish feeding. This week also saw more big browns being caught, the best of which was the 13.07 fish that fell to GARY MORRIS.(see below)He took the huge brown on a coral booby fished on the surface in Villice Bay.
R. Hemmings also found the bigger fish and he included a brown of 7.14 and a rainbow of 5.12 in his bag of eight fish. These fish came from the North Bank and were also taken from a boat.

WHAT A FISH!!! For the past few years Chew Valley has had a habit of producing exceptional browns. Most years a double figure fish is landed and a few years ago a magnificent 13 pounder was taken by Rob Hankins. Today CRAIG BARR caught an incredible fish which has dwarfed even that specimen. Craig, the England Team Manager was fishing in the officals match of the Home International Fly Fishing Championships when he hooked and landed the 15lb 12oz fish of a lifetime. It was caught from a boat from just off of Woodford Bank and fell to an orange blob. Craig thought he had hooked a pike as the fish stayed deep and fought doggedly. When he saw the huge brownie he realised he had hooked a very special fish. The fish was brought ashore and witnessed & weighed at Woodford Lodge. Craig is going to have the fish set up.
Well done Craig.
Over the weekend the weather deteriorated even more but MARTIN COTTIS landed yet another huge brownie. He was fishing in Herons Green Bay when he saw the fish rise. He cast his claret bits to the fish and landed it after a frantic five-minute fight in the strong SW wind. The fish measured nearly 32 inches long and was estimated at well over 12lbs weight before it was returned to fight another day.

The first large contest of the year took place on Saturday when the BRFFA Snowbee competition was fished. And great results were had from both bank and boat. 18 anglers tried their luck from the shore and 6 limit bags were caught with a total of 83 fish taken. Boat anglers also fared well with 8 limits falling to the 42 competitors. Overall a rod average of 4.5 was recorded with an average weight of 2lb 6oz. Overall winner was last year’s champion, TONY BALDWIN whose 8 fish weighed 20lb 4oz.

Other notable catches were MARK WITHYMAN 19-13, ANDREW HEDGER
19-06, LEE BARTLETT 18-11,DEV STICKLEY 18-10, MALCOLM FISHER 18-06, JOHN GLANFIELD 18-05 AND DAVE DRAKE 18-02.

A special prize for the biggest fish was won by KEITH BROWN whose 6-05 rainbow just pipped a brown of 6-04 taken by ROYSTON JENNINGS.

The biggest fish from the lakes this year so far, was captured by DAVE COOMBES. The 8-14 rainbow was taken in Herons Green from the shore. Another good fish was a 7.00 brown caught from Woodford Bank by TED SMART.
