Report

Well this is the final of my ramblings for this season. I hope you have enjoyed it all as much as we have! And I hope these little rambles have been useful and indeed I hope enjoyable also.

The weather for the final week has been simply cracking given that it is Mid October! We have had sunshine and light winds for the most part although the wind has swung through almost all points on the compass this week! And what a cracking week we have had with the fishing too! The week’s rod average was an excellent 4.40 per rod. The fish have remained high in the water and continued to feed well chasing all sorts of small fry patterns from minkies and humungus to dabblers and damsels! North Island has produced well this week as have Sitch Plantation and Fishtail Creek.

Our Fishery Record for rainbows was beaten with 3 days to spare! Regular angler Don Webber was the lucky angler who tempted the all time Carsington Water Rainbow! This whopping fish topped the scales at 9lb 6oz beating the previous record by nearly half a pound! Don was drifting out from the dam wall past the sailing club island when he had a savage take on his cat’s whisker. He knew at once this was a good fish. A few minutes into the scrap the trout surfaced and gave Don his first glimpse of his record rainbow. After nearly having a heart attack at the sight of it Don continued to carefully play this monster out until it could be brought, finally, to the boat where his boat partner (and sometime ghillie!) Derek was able to get the net under it, although it was a tight fit! (I reckon you might need a bigger net next year Don!).

Congratulations Don from all the team at Carsington Water Fishery

Chad Critchley takes the final honours for the best brown trout of the week. Chad Landed a beautiful fully finned resident brown that weighed in at exactly 4lb. This cracking resident brown fell to a black & gold humungus fished on a DI5. Chad was drifting just to the right of North Island when the fish hit his lure and immediately aimed down for the depths. With a serious bend in his rod Chad applied the pressure to bring the fish to the surface where he saw a large gold flank turn in the water. The fish then made for the deeps again before Chad got the upper hand and eased the trout over the edge of his net.

Overall this has been a superb season the fishery record has fallen three times this year and the fishing has been great. We have had rod averages for the whole season of 3.73 from the bank 4.97 from the boats and overall the season average has been 4.87!

As I have already said that is it for another season, but keep you eyes on this space for updates and news for the new season in 2010.

All that remains for me to say is, once again, thanks again to everyone who came to Carsington Water this season. We hope that you have enjoyed your season with us. I would also like to say a huge thanks very much to all the team who work so hard to make this fishery what it is.

Tight lines to all of you and a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Top spots for the week were the Sitch Plantation, across the mouth Fishtail Creek, Buoy 3, Sailing Club Island, North Island and drifts across the Main Basin.

The best flies were Black Minky, White Minky, Cormorant, Dabblers, Orange Blob, Humngus, Damsel and Black & Green Fritz.

Tight lines for 2010

The Carsington Water Fishery Team

Ian Jones with his winning fish

John Stone of South Staffs Water was the wining individual with a superb bag of 20lb 2oz for 8 fish, including 2 trout of 5lb!

Best rainbow this week goes to Ernie Clark who missed the fishery record by a mere 2oz with a stunning 8lb 13oz Rainbow! Ernie was fishing a Montana on a floating line and was drifting across Fishtail Creek when he felt a gentle take and struck. It was clear immediately that this was a big fish as his rod bent over and line came off his reel. It was with great relief many minutes later that Ernie was able to get his net under this monster fish!

Mr M Smith Captured the best rainbow of the week, A whopping well mended trout of 6lb 12oz. Mr Smith was fishing out from sitch plantation across the mouth of Fishtail Creek using a booby on the point and cormorants on the droppers. He was  bringing his flies back with a smooth retrieve when this cracking fish fell to a cormorant on the dropper. Mr Smith had a big battle to keep the fish from heading into the weeds but eventually he gained the upper hand and was able to slip the net under his prize!

  1. Elaine Sherry with a total bag (inc. time bonus) of 16lb 4oz
  2. Sue Sissions with a total bag (inc. time bonus) of 15lb 12oz

Best fish of the day went to Scarlett Hodgson who landed a cracking 4lb 15oz rainbow to help her qualify for the team. Scarlett took her big fish with an orange blob booby fished on a slime line in front of North Island,

Scarlett Hodgson Winner of the Biggest fish

Congratulations to all the qualifiers who made the team. We wish them all the best in representing their country next year.

This week’s best rainbow goes to Mick Holland who landed an impressive rainbow trout of exactly 6lb. Mick was fishing a fast sink line with a single white lure and a quick retrieve. Mick was drifting out across the main basin by buoy 4 where he and  his boat partner had already had some successful drifts across this area. They had gone around once more when Mick felt a really solid thump through his rod and he was in! With all the open water and depth to go at the trout really put a huge bend in Mick’s rod as it took line from his reel and made a spirited fight for freedom.

Mick also took this week’s best brown trout; an excellent resident fish of 3lb. Mick and his boat partner had moved over to the mouth of fishtail creek and were drifting inside of buoy 5 when he hooked in to this cracking brown. Again with all the open water to go at the brownie put its head down and fought hard until Mick was able to get the net under it. This lovely brownie also fell to the white lure fished on a fast sink line with a quick retrieve.

Brian Goldstraw is the captor of this week’s best rainbow. A stunning fish of 8lb 9oz. Brian caught his monster fish whilst fishing off the edge of Flat Island (the small one in front of North Island). He was using diawl bach’s on a floating line and bringing them in with a slow retrieve when there was a solid bang and the fish tried to take his rod out of his hands. Once on, the trout really gave Brian the run around using its weight to dive deep and pile the pressure on. It was some good time before Brian was able to bring the trout to the surface and get its head up and slip the net under it with a great sense of relief! It was the best of 12 fish for Brian on the day. This was Brian’s first visit to Carsington Water and one I am sure he’ll remember for a long time!

Our very own ranger Mike Hurst has the honours for the best rainbow caught this week! Mike caught his excellent 6lb 6oz rainbow from a boat off Half moon field. Mike was approx. 35yds off the bank using a hothead damsel on a floating line. Mike was casting out and counting the fly down for 10 seconds before starting a slow retrieve with an occasional jerk. As Mike started his retrieve he felt a gentle take and then as he lifted the rod into the fish it became a vicious take as the fish tore off through the water. Mike knew it was a good fish when it came to the surface for the first time and he could see the wide shoulder break the surface as the fish turned for another run. It was several rod bending minutes before mike was able to get his net under the fish. Getting the fish in the net was complicated slightly by Mike still having his net folded up in the bottom of the boat! and so had to get it unfolded and under the fish as he was trying to play the fish at the same time! So Mikes tip to everyone is… always have your net ready, just incase!

The best rainbow this week goes to Mr P Hindle. Mr Hindle landed a superb 7lb Rainbow. This monster fish took a mini viva fished on a floating line from the bank at Millfields. Mr Hindle was tweaking his flies back just below the surface when his prize fish came up and swallowed his fly and erupted from the surface before turning and making for the deeper water. It took Mr Hindle a good 10 minutes to win the fight and subdue the trout enough to bring it to the net.

Report:

Well Peter Thomson has done it again. He has broken his own fishery record for Rainbow trout! This time Peter landed an absolutely stunning rainbow of 8lb 15oz! beating his previous record by 3oz. Peter was fishing from the bank at Millfields Point using a damsel nymph on an intermediate line when he hooked into this monster.  This huge fish took Peter all round the houses before he was able to finally slip the net under it and bring it safely ashore. It was the best of 12 fish for Peter including 5 Brown’s.

The weather in the early part of the week has been a little wet with some persistent rain, but the sunshine was back by the weekend. Winds have remained light if variable in direction. On the warmer days there are still plenty of big buzzer hatches happening and floating line with buzzers or nymphs is still the best method. Keep an eye on the Hawthorn now, as it comes into flower it will be time to get the hoppers and Hawthorn’s out of the box! Also the lake olives and damsels can’t be far behind.

Regular angler John Scragg landed this week’s best Brown. A superb grown of trout of 4lb 7oz. John was fishing from his boat off the front edge of North Island. He was using a floating line with a team of buzzers and retrieving with a very slow retrieve. The take was very gentle, just a slow tightening of the line until the fish realised it was hooked and then the scrap was anything but gentle! This was the best fish of a total of 14 trout for John that day.

We also held our annual heat of the Lexus European Fly Fishing Championship on Tuesday. It was a damp and quite chilly day for the 22 competitors who took part, but a good day was had by all. There were a total of 197 trout caught giving a cracking rod average of 8.95 for the day. The largest fish of the day was a belting 6lb 5oz rainbow caught by Andrew Straton.

The 5 anglers who qualified for the grand final in September were:

  • Andrew Straton                     total weight 22lb 15oz
  • Steve Cullen                         total weight 22lb 15oz
  • Ian Gaskell                           total weight 21lb 8oz
  • Alex McEwan                        total weight 21lb 2oz
  • Glenn Moody                        total weight 21lb 0oz

Congratulations to Mr Peter Thompson, new holder of the Carsington Water record for Rainbow trout.

The week started out well with good early season conditions prevailing, by Thursday though it was a different story. Strong NE winds came howling down the valley and brought sharp reminders of the start to last season! But by the weekend the winds had gone and spring had returned. Everything is bursting in leaf and the first few swallows have been seen picking insects from the waters surface. And the swallows are not the only creature to take advantage of this abundance of insects, the trout have also been making full use and can often be seen rising to suck something down. The best tactic’s are still buzzers and small nymphs but after the rougher weather Damsels and lures worked well.

We have a new fishery record for Rainbow trout!

Bob Fitzpatrick has broken our fishery record! Bob’s day started slowly in the cold morning, but as the day warmed and buzzers started hatching the fish switched on. Both Bob and his boat partner Ian Ritchie had been catching steadily all day from various areas, including some lovely browns that they found on the north bank of Fishtail Creek. They eventually found themselves off the end of the Watersports Island where Bob was straightline nymphing with a team of black nymphs on a floating line. As Bob retrived his line with a slow figure eight he felt a subtle take and struck. The trout imeadiatley tore off pulling Bob’s rod and his arm right over! After a solid 10 minute scrap and a tense final moment as Bob’s top dropper caught in his top ring as he brought the fish to the net. Despite the last minute drama Bob Safely landed a stunning 7lb 4oz Rainbow trout.

Congratulations on the new record Bob!
