Fishery to Close.

The Fishery is closing in 2010 to facilitate alterations to the Visitor Centre and car parking.   Severn Trent Water will be making public their plans for the scheme shortly.   The Company have assured me the Fishery will be reopened during 2011.   However from my own point of view my lease period finishes at the end of the year and so I can only assume that this will be the end of my connection with the Fishery.

In that vein Margaret and I would like to thank all of our customers, suppliers and staff who have given their support to the Fishery. We have appreciated all the help and loyalty

If anyone is owed gift vouchers then Severn Trent Water will honour them and they can be contacted on : 01788 - 811107.

Should anyone want to contact me or Margaret the Lodge number below will be operative for a little while longer.   Finally we would like to take this opportunity to wish all of the Draycote Water anglers along with our suppliers and staff the very best of luck for the future.

    Keith and Margaret Causer.   Tel : 01788 - 812018 or Fax : 01788 - 815711

Thanks for your e-mail, Steve. Severn Trent Water is making a number of improvements to its site at Draycote Water. This is part of a programme of ongoing improvements to all the public access sites that we own and manage. By regularly reviewing the services that we provide we are able to offer the best and most suitable blend of conservation, access, recreation and education opportunities to our customers and communities.

Unfortunately, whilst construction works are taking place we have to review the activities that will be offered on site. It is important to us that all activities can be enjoyed by visitors but we need to be able to manage these properly and, for that reason, activities which will be affected by the works will be scaled back or closed during the development of the site.

So yes, we do now plan to close the fishery for the 2010 season so that construction work can go ahead. This is not a decision that has been taken lightly, but we have concluded that it is the only sensible option under the circumstances.

We understand that some anglers may be upset at our decision to temporarily close this site and we have organised a meeting with the Draycote Flyfishing Association to speak with them directly regarding our plans. I would like to reassure you that we do not plan to close the fishery permanently, and we fully intend for fishing to remain an integral part of the site’s facilities when the works are complete.

The improvement plans for Draycote Water are currently under development. The car parking issue you've mentioned is just one aspect. Amongst the proposed changes to the site are changes to the road layout, increased parking facilities, coach access to the visitor centre and improvements to the visitor centre, including a new education exhibition. No planning applications have yet been submitted.

regards

Attaching photo of rainbow trout caught at draycote water on 3/6/09 weight 14 lbs 3ozs which is the largest fish caught at draycote so far this year.        I caught this fish on a floating line with a montana nymph.                       Regards Robert Griffiths ( Nuneaton)

Can we have more reports like this one please, thank you Ziggy.

I fished Draycote on Friday 18th and among my fish was this handsome Brown of 9lbs 4 ozs, it took an epoxy fry imitation at a depth of about 6 feet from the end of Draycote bank.( not the valve tower end). It was stuffed with sticklebacks and the fight was awesome. Regards David Fenn

Wednesday 27th May : Mr Bob Wallinger of Sharnford boated the season's heaviest eight fish limit for 41lbs 00ozs.   Wednesday 3rd June : Mr Robert Griffiths of Nuneaton took the biggest rainbow from the bank weighing 14lbs 3ozs.   Sunday 4th October : Mr Ray Brooks of Daventry caught and released again a brown of 12lbs 00ozs from the bank which was the best of the season.   More generally the main features of the season have been the outstanding quality of the fish along with the numbers caught. The average catch may be as high as nine fish per angler if we included the fish which were caught and released.   In fishing terms it has been a vintage year and I'm sure the best ever at the fishery.   Many thanks to the correspondents for their support and efforts in maintaining the excellent communications throughout the year. It is very much appreciated by us all.   Enquiries to : Fishing Lodge, Draycote Water, Kites Hardwick, Rugby. CV23 8AB Telephone : 01788 - 812018        Fax : 01788 - 815711

Comments :   Without doubt the catch of the week has to be Mr Bill Tomkins five fish which weighed 29lbs 5ozs. Bill from Nuneaton was bank fishing at Toft Bay and caught them all to one of his own Black and Red Buzzer Patterns. Included in his bag were fish of 13lbs 00ozs, 7lbs 7ozs and 6lbs 9ozs. Not content with that Bill had another go two days later and took five more fish weighing 20lbs 9ozs.

Mrs Ann Marchant of Kidderminster boated a rainbow weighing 8lbs 8ozs. Mr Richard Yates banked an 8lbs 4ozs. Mr Duncan Watson took an eight pounder. Mr Brian Jones and Mr George Smith both caught a 7lbs 00ozs and teenager Master Troy Baker of Coventry boated one for 6lbs 8ozs.   West Haddon Boat angler Mr John Dobbie took the heaviest eight fish limit at 27lbs 00ozs.    Although the browns are out of season they are still being caught and returned. Mr Steve Harrison of Cubbington returned a 10lbs 00ozs. Mr Chris Brodest put one back at 10lbs 3ozs. Mr Phil Wood returned a 10lbs 12ozs. Others include 7lbs 8ozs to Banbury bank angler Mr Brian Hall, 5lbs 6ozs to Mr Mick Heath, 5lbs 00ozs to Mr Dave Simons, 8lbs 00ozs to Mr Mike Edkins and 8lbs 00ozs to Mr Jim Dempsey.   Fishing has been close to the bank and a whole range of different patterns have been working. Perhaps a common theme in the method has been a slow retrieve.   Toft has been the best spot, however like the last couple of weeks the fish are being caught in all places close to the bank.   Boat fishing finishes Sunday 25th October. Bank fishing re-opens Tuesday 27th October until Saturday 31st October..   Enquiries to : Fishing Lodge, Draycote Water, Kites Hardwick, Rugby. A pair of bank experts from Banbury Mr Stan Hillman and friend Mr Mick Cronin have had half a dozen between them through the week. Stan's best was 10lbs 00ozs and Mick's was 8lbs 00ozs. Mr Ismael Hossen of Radlett returned an 8lbs 12ozs from the boat. Mr Mike Nolan of Coventry had a seven pounder and Mr B Parker put back a 6lbs 2ozs.   Cornfield and Toft are the most productive areas again, but fish coming from all round and the fish are all close to the bank.   The most reported fly pattern has been the Diawl Bach, but Muddler Minnow, Floating Fry, Zonka, Daddy Longlegs, Cruncher, Hopper, Montana and Red Buzzer all working well.

Boats have been catching in most areas when the high winds have allowed. Those big winds have also meant the lures have been doing best. Muddlers, Zonkas, Daddy Longlegs, Orange Hoppers and Buzzer have all worked at different times.   Bank anglers have caught at Hensborough, Overflow, Dunn's Bay and Biggin Bay on Buzzer and Diawl Bach.

Comments :   Bedworth boat angler Mr Jim Dempsey caught the week's largest fish, the 7lbs 4ozs rainbow and he also weighed in the heaviest eight fish limit at 28lbs 00ozs. All came to the Tube Fly near to Middle Shoal and Musborough Shoal.   Mr Mick Bull of Cawston, Rugby took a rainbow of 7lbs 00ozs, again by Middle Shoal.   A few browns were returned as well including one at 6lbs 00ozs to Coventry boat angler Mr Craig Lole at Rainbow Corner. And nearby at the Overflow a three pounder to bank angler Mr John Pearson also of Coventry.   Johnstone, Glasgow boat pair Mr Alan Brown and Mr Jimmy Wright caught their fish on a Zonka, Wednesday. The next day they weighed in ten fish for 26lbs 8ozs and took every one off the top of the water to size 12 and 14 CDC Shuttlecock Black Buzzers. This illustrates just how different the methods and depths have been from day to day.   For boats Toft Bay has been the best area with rainbow Corner, Dunn's Bay and Middle Shoal all producing as well. The Overflow and Toft Bay have been the best for bank anglers.   Other good bags include 26lbs 00ozs to Mr Rod Wilson of Leicester, 23lbs 4ozs to Mr M Pascoe of Swansea, 22lbs 8ozs to Mr Tom Jones of Coventry, 22lbs 3ozs to Mr Spencer Williams of Pontadawe FF and 21lbs 11ozs to Mr Richard Webb of Higham Ferreres FF.

Comments :   Firstly I should have reported last week the 4lbs 8ozs blue trout taken by Middleton Stoney boat angler Mr Andrew Hickman on the Buzzer and also the outstanding 21lbs 10ozs limit by thirteen year old Invicta FFC member Mr Andrew Worker of Bedford. Andrew was top rod of the Club outing and all of his fish came to the Tube Fly.   This week the biggest bag was 27lbs 9ozs taken by Leicester boat angler Mr Rod Wilson fishing near to Draycote Dam. Mr M Iliffe also from Leicester took eight for 24lbs 8ozs, Mr Eaton of Corby weighed in 23lbs 00ozs as did Mr Remo Cuccirullo of Bedford and from Coventry Mr Tom Jones took eight for 22lbs 10ozs.   Mr Julian Davies of Gilder's Tackle, Northampton caught five weighing 18lbs 2ozs. Other notable five fish limits include 17lbs 8ozs to Mr Ron Blackwell of Leicester, 17lbs 00ozs to Mr Paul Walker of Derby and 15lbs 10ozs to Mr Bob Batsford of Shipston on Stour all on the Buzzer near the Inlet.   Fish of the week was the 6lbs 00ozs rainbow to Bedworth boat angler Mr Malc Randle.   Bank has been harder. Boats have also been tricky at times, but fish have been caught in all areas with the Minkies and Zonkas doing well behind the drifting boats. However Blobs and Buzzers have also worked, but fished deep and almost static.    Enquiries to : Fishing Lodge, Draycote Water, Kites Hardwick, Rugby.   Comments :   Fish are much more up in the water after the cooler breezy conditions. Bank anglers have caught on Buzzer, Bloodworm, Diawl Bach and Dry Whickhams. The boat fishers have caught in nearly all areas and Cormorant, Damsel, GH Daddy, Red Holo Buzzer, White Fritz, Daddy, Orange Blob, Tube Fly, Yellow Muddler, Silver Invicta, Montana, Minkie and Booby have all done the trick at different times.   Week's best bag was 32lbs 00ozs to Mr Rod Wilson of Leicester who took all his fish on the Tube Fly between Draycote Dam and Musborough Shoal.   Comments :   Bank anglers have had a good week on Hares Ear, Diawl Bach, Cormorant and even Dry Fly later on some evenings. Tower Paddock, Cornfield and Flat Stones have been the best areas.   For the boats the fish have mostly been down deep with Tube Fly, Booby, Orange Blob, Black and Green Lure and White and Green Lure most effective.. Some bucked the trend though like Potteries man Mr Dave Naylor who boated eight fish for 22lbs 8ozs all on the Dry Fly. Mr Bill Morris caught on the Orange Hopper. Shipmans Buzzer has also worked.   Best brown was 6lbs 13ozs to Leicester boat angler Mr Rod Wilson. Rod took eight fish in all for 30lbs 9ozs. Mr D Cooper, York caught a 6lbs 10ozs brown and his bag weighed 29lbs 4ozs. Mr Bob Wallinger of Sharnford took a brown at 4lbs 12ozs, he also took the week's heaviest rainbow at 8lbs 10ozs which both helped towards his bag weight of 32lbs 14ozs - the best of the week. Other good bags include 31lbs 2ozs to Bromsgrove's Mr John Hoskins, 29lbs 14ozs to Mr Peter Elliott also from Bromsgrove and 27lbs 10ozs to Mr Keith Embrey of Oswestry.   There were plenty of good five fish limits also with 17lbs 8ozs to Mr Ron Blackwell, 16lbs 1ozs to Mr Gerry Gordon, 16lbs 8ozs to Mr Gordon Hancox, 16lbs 00ozs each to Mr John Dews, Mr Michael Kieran and Mr Paul Baker, 15lbs 11ozs to Mr Bill Tomkins and 15lbs 00ozs to Mr Don Roper of Coventry.

Mr David Wilcox of Carmarthen took a few nice fish on his annual boat trip to the fishery despite the hot, bright conditions. His best was a 5lbs 12ozs rainbow to a Hot Head Diawl Bach.   Best areas for boats have been the Cornfield and Draycote Dam. Bank areas have moved on the wind, but Cornfield, Rainbow Corner, Tower Paddock and Flat Stones have all figured. It has been a trickier time with the sunny and sometimes breezy conditions. The pulling tactics have probably done better overall for the boats with the fritzy, sparkly patterns fished deeper. For the bank anglers Diawl Bach, Hares Ear and Buzzer remain the favourites.   Enquiries to : Fishing Lodge, Draycote Water, Kites Hardwick, Rugby. There were five fish per angler taken in the match and probably as many again returned.   All areas have fished from boats, but "A" buoy, "B" buoy, Croft Shoal and Musborough Shoal have been the most popular.    The bank has continued to produce plenty of fish with the Tower Paddock and the Flat Stones again fishing well, but by the end of the week the bank areas had extended to include the Cornfield, Dunn's Bay and Rainbow Corner.   Hares Ear, Diawl Bach, Black Buzzer, Orange Blob, Sparkler all doing well with a few taken on Dry Fly also.   32lbs 00ozs was the heaviest eight fish limit this week to Mr Ivor Jones of Perton near Wolverhampton which included a brown of 7lbs 8ozs, all came to the boat. The shiny silver, big tailed fish keep appearing from bank and boat. Stocking continues twice each week with plenty of fresh fish, but the option is still always there to hunt out those hard fighting resident fish.   Praise and thanks are long overdue for our fish supplier Mr Andrew Maund of Exe Valley Fishery for the fantastic fish he produces. Andrew has been Draycote's sole supplier for nearly twenty years.    Mr Eric Whale of Coventry played a brownie until it eventually broke the surface and leapt into the bottom of his boat. He sportingly returned the 6lbs 8ozs fish to the water.   Best rainbow was 12lbs 10ozs to Coventry bank angler Mr Ian Smith on an Orange Damsel. Mr Tony Broadway also from Coventry took a 10lbs 2ozs rainbow from the Tower Paddock bank.
