Boat anglers continue to get the bigger bags but, unusually for the time of year, bank anglers are still catching many of the larger fish. A lower than average water temperature and a reliable weddcutter has kept the margins fishable. As many of the Elinor regulars know, when the sun comes out the more the fish rise to the damsels so the coming week should see some spectacular daytime rises to the adults.

Boats are now getting the best of the catches. When the sun is out it is best to anchor down the middle and fish a damsel or buzzer on the point with diawl bachs or hares ear on the dropper. Drifting with traditional wet flies has been productive in the evening. Bank anglers have still done well on cloudy days. Even on the hottest day there are plenty of fish rising to adult damsels but they are not easy to catch. Weedcutting around the margins will be starting soon.

The warmer weather has really got the massive damsel hatch underway. Even on the brightest day fish are surface feeding on the nymphs and adults.
Boat anglers are starting to take the bigger bags now although plenty of fish are in the margins early morning and evening.
Great dry fly sport in the evening rise with good hatches of buzzers and small sedges.

The constant NE winds have not stopped the fish feeding although for a couple of days the wind changed to E and catches slowed. Boat and bank anglers are still catching equally well. During the day the fish are feeding well on damsel nymphs as well as on the non stop hatches of black or olive buzzers. On cloudy days most fish are being caught in the top foot of water so it is important not to fish below them which is easy to do with fluorocarbon leaders. If the sun comes out then try a lightly weighted damsel or an indicator with size 12 skinny buzzers at 18 inches and 3 foot. The dull, wet days have produced good hatches of pond olives. There seem to have been many more olives this season. If the fish are taking them then keep a small hares ear nymph on your cast at all times! Dries have been doing well in the superb evening rise. The fish have been showing last thing whatever the temperature as long as the wind is not too strong.
Competition News On Sunday May 18th a bank match for the Tommy Wood memorial trophy was held. Match rules were floating line and buzzer imitations only.

Another good week with boat and bank anglers enjoying excellent sport even during the mini heatwave. Fish are still feeding on buzzers through most of the day. Plenty of larger ones hatching now. The warm weather has got a few of the first damsels hatching. By the end of May they will be the predominate food source during the daytime. At long last the evening rises have arrived. From 8.30pm onwards the lake is like a jacuzzi! Its a great time to practice your dry fly technique.
This Sunday, May 18th, Elinor is holding the Tommy Wood Memorial Cup: A bank competition, free to enter, fishing 9.30am - 3.30pm Raffle proceeds to Sue Ryder, Thorpe Hall, Peterborough. Elinor is still on great form from both boat and bank. Even when the wind changed to a NE direction the fish still fed heavily on buzzers from 11am onwards. Most of the buzzers are still small with size 14 or 16 proving best. A slight increase in water temperature will see the larger ones appear. Pond olives are hatching most days, especially in the West arm shallows. The arrival of the Hawthorn fly should bring the fish on the surface at anytime now. A black hopper can be deadly. In the meantime the best method has been to keep your buzzers in the 2 - 5 foot range.
Competition news On Saturday April 19 Elinor held a heat of the Airflo Classic National bank fishing competition. Teams of three anglers and individuals were attempting to qualify for the final in October at Elinor. In cold, windy conditions 24 anglers caught 90 fish. From mid morning onwards the trout have been gorging themselves on small black or olive buzzers. Straight line nymphing or under a bung between 2- 5 foot with size 14 immitations have been the best methods. Some pond olives are also hatching so worth trying a size 12 scruffy hares ear or olive nymph. A few fish are showing on the surface when the wind drops. Olive cdc or greenwells have been the best drys. Boat or bank fishing is equally productive. Evening rises should start anytime. If you have been waiting for the proper fishing to start, Elinor is worth a visit now!

Nick Middleton from Thorpe Waterville caught and released this 9lb 6oz Rainbow from Elinor on Saturday. Nick was using a floating line and damsel nymph from the bank in the West arm.
The bank is fishing exceptionally well. Only on bright windy days were the fish harder to tempt. Teams of nymphs or mini lures were equally good but as we get well into March the buzzer fishing will be most productive. Many fish have been found to have small olive buzzers and immature damsels in their stomachs already.

A fantastic turnout of anglers over the opening weekend. Above average temperatures meant the fish were in a feeding mood around most of the lake. The usual early season spots such as the Dam and Boat bay produced well. However anglers who ventured further up the lake were rewarded with plenty of sport especially in the East arm ,Shallow bay and Lagoon. Most anglers used lures on a floater or slow intermediate but nymphs such as bloodworm, black buzzer and diawl bach also worked well. There is no need for a boat at the moment as most of the fish are within 20 yards of the bank.

Lawrence Ball and Jamie Weston of River Gwash Trout Farm came to Elinor today for a boat session. Lawrence, from Ryhall near Stamford had his first run of the day at 3pm but it was worth the wait as it turned out to be this personal best, superb 27lb 8oz fish. It took a trout livebait fished over 12ft of water and was carefully returned after photographing.
