The Lexus European Fly Fishing Championships graced the Eyebrook fishery earlier this week as fifty anglers from all around Europe and the Home counties fished two heats to try and qualify for the grand final of this prestigious competition, which will be held at Chew Valley Lake in September 2009.
Day One of the competition was greeted with a fine day for fishing and it was not too long before rods were beginning to bend into fish that later proved to average a very respectable size of 2lb 11oz. The fishing was challenging but results were good and Keith Jones was the eventual winner of day one with six fish taken for 16lb, and a further five fish on catch and release, giving Keith a grand total weight of 26lb. The heaviest fish of the day at 9lb 1oz fell to the rod of Milan Hladik of the Czech Republic but Milan had already qualified in a previous heat so the winner of the wild card for the next heaviest fish taken on the day went to Alastair Munn with a fine rainbow of 5lb 11oz. Heat two of the competition, floating line only, fished a little slower due to changing weather conditions and in actual fact the match was stopped in the afternoon for an hour due to a very violent thunderstorm. Winner on day two was Philip Shaw-Brown with the heaviest bag and the wild card winner with a rainbow that weighed also 5lb 11oz was Ron Gent of Leicester.
Many thanks go to the competition organizer John Horsey.

The fishery has been on cracking form recently with anglers enjoying fine “top of the water” action, flies such as Daddies, Hoppers and Cdc emerger’s have been accounting for some superb fighting fit grown on fish.
The Association of Major Fishing clubs enjoyed their Eyebrook heat as thirty anglers took 114 fish for a rod average of 3.8; the winner was Paul Roach with seven rainbows that weighed 21lb 10oz.
Stuart Medford of Monmouth caught his very first rainbow trout at the fishery recently, a fish that weighed 2lb 8oz while boat fishing the Main basin with a Daddy long legs fished on a floating line, very well done Stuart.
The heaviest fish of the week fell to Stoke Albany rod Hank Needham, a super rainbow that weighed in at 9lb 12oz. Hank took the superb fish while bank fishing on the Bell with a Green Hopper.
John Dracup of Oakham fished the bank and took three fine rainbows including a five pounder; on a Hares ear Cdc Emerger.
George Knight of Stanion also took a nice brace for 5lb 12oz from the bank at the Hawthorns.

The eventual winner of the competition was Julian Davies of Kettering with eight fish for 21lb 110z.

Gordon Price and Nobby Clark of Leicester enjoyed a real Red Letter Day and took twelve lovely rainbows for 28lb on Cdc emerger’s while boat fishing the Main basin.
Simon Taylor of Uppingham enjoyed some brilliant top of the water sport to Cdc emerger’s and Daddies, Simon took five fine fish for 12lb 7oz and returned two on catch and release.
Season ticket holders Pat Green and Mike Harries of Isham enjoyed some frenetic sport fishing Orange boobies on the surface; the pair took eleven good rainbows for 31lb, the biggest of which weighed 4lb 12oz.

The fishery has maintained high water levels throughout the winter period encouraging the life cycle of the hidden Chironomids, and all bodes well for some spectacular buzzer fishing. A team of Black epoxy buzzers will generally suffice, Crunchers, Diawl Bach and Snatchers fished on floating lines will account for many more quality rainbows.

Eyebrook boat fishermen have experienced some wonderful sport fishing at anchor around the margins.

Arthur Cullingworth of Sandy accompanied by his regular boat partner Norman Thompson of Billinghay enjoyed their day fishing off The Chestnut Tree, Arthur taking a superb brace weighing 7lb 10oz and 5lb 2oz on Black Pheasant Tail nymphs, and the pair accumulating sixteen fish for 48lb 14oz.

Victoria Liggens and Richard Hollis of Hallaton boat fished and took sixteen quality Rainbows for 51lb 15oz on Montana nymphs fished on an Intermediate line, Richard included a 13lb 4oz Rainbow in his bag, the heaviest rainbow of the 2009 season so far.

Lee Henfrey of Leicester and Rob Sosbe of Market Harborough boat fished at Stoke Dry and took sixteen fish to claim the heaviest combined bag to date, 52lb 5oz. This catch included a rainbow of 12lb, which Rob caught, with several other fish in the 5lb region.

Bank fishing has continued to be nothing less than superb; recently Mick Clay of Thorny fished the bank into a head wind at the Three Trees and enjoyed some great sport on a sunken line with a small Yellow Booby. Mick took eight fish for 27lb 3oz including in his bag a superb 10lb 8oz Rainbow. See Mick with his super rainbow in the picture gallery at www.eyebrook.com

Bob Smith of Corby bank fished The Willows and caught and released a superb 10lb Rainbow on a Montana Nymph fished on a floating line.

20 years an Eyebrook season ticket holder, Lionel Wesson of Oakham fished the woodside above Robbos cabin with a floating line and Green and Black Tadpole to take a superb 8lb Rainbow and five other fish totalling 19lb.

Wes Toone and Russ Lee representing Thornton Fly Fishers, bank fished at Pollards Jump and caught eight fine fish between them, Wes was rewarded with a super 8lb 12oz Rainbow taken on a Damsel Booby. Take a look at Wes with his fish at www.eyebrook.com

Along with numbers of quality Rainbow trout, 3,000 Brown trout have recently been introduced into the fishery. Sometimes considered a nuisance fish these spirited fighters have now been proven to have a terrific growth rate, being of the triploid strain, and will certainly add fireworks to fishing at the ‘Brook’ toward the back end of the season.

It is essential that boats are booked well in advance, to do this, and for all the other up to the minute fishery information call the fishing lodge on 01536 772930 or visit our website at www.eyebrook.com.

Weekly Report 26th to 30th March 2009

Total trout caught 1413 Rod returns 284 Fish per rod 4.97

The weather, well, we won’t talk about the weather, but the fishing on opening day 2009 at Eyebrook was superb!

Seventy-six bank anglers enjoyed some super sport with trout averaging 2lb 4oz, 415 trout were banked, 93 caught and released.

The fishing has got off to an absolutely cracking start at Eyebrook and anglers have scored with lots of limit bags, and enjoyed catching top draw Rainbows.

The heaviest fish caught from the bank on opening day fell to the rod of Alan Wood from Oakham; Alan’s fish weighed 6lb 10oz and took a Green and Black lure, Alan was accompanied by his good friend Jimmy Reid of Oakham who also took five lovely fish.

On opening day the Leicestershire bank was more favourable for anglers due to wind direction and The Bell and The Hawthorns produced a lot of fish, a few anglers did decide to fish further up the reservoir at The Cowshed and Chestnut Tree and were also rewarded with plenty of top quality Rainbows.

Sid Sharratt and Geoff Allsop of Nuneaton enjoyed brilliant sport at The Black cabin fishing Black spiders, Diawl Bach and Buzzers, and Geoff on one occasion landing three trout at once, Sid insists that Geoff is sponsored by Hartley’s jam!!

Andy Pardoe of Wellingborough, a relative beginner to the sport of fly fishing, was elated with his four Rainbows that he caught on an Orange lure from the bank at Mucky Bay, Alan’s four fish weighed 10lb.

Mick Bennett of Ridlington and Ady Naylor of Uppingham fished Sams Dyke and took limits each; Mick included a nice 4lb 4oz Rainbow in his bag, and Ady also returned another seven fish on catch and release.

The opening day boat anglers also found the fish hugging the margins and Eyebrook regulars Bob Margery and Jim Ward from Market Harborough fished Black and Green Lures to take fourteen super Rainbows that tipped the scales to 34lb 8oz.

John Rose and Alan Brooking of Leicester kicked their 2009 boat season off to a flying start and enjoyed their opening day taking fifteen Rainbows between them for 31lb 10oz.

Martin Dickerson of Swaffam, Norfolk fished the second day of the season and anchored his boat off the Island, Martin fished with a Cats Whisker and caught a superb 7lb Rainbow, Well done Martin.

The heaviest Rainbow of the season so far, a fabulous fish that weighed 12lb 8oz fell to the rod of Keith Prowting of Nottingham, Keith was anchored off The Willows and fished an intermediate line with a Montana Nymph. Mal Wright of Leicester used the same line, fly combination to take a super 8lb 2oz Rainbow, anchored in Sams Dyke.

It was good to see my old friend from Poland, Jaro Gladis who had paid a flying visit to sample some of Eyebrook’s early season bank fishing, Jaro fished above Robbos cabin and he said to me that he had caught  “lots of fish” and he did!!

Wonderful to meet all our old friends again, after the long cold winter months, and nice to meet a lot of new anglers to Eyebrook, we hope you all enjoy the 2009-fishing season.

Finally I would like to welcome Kit Daniels and Jamie Moore who under the guidance of Dawn and Mark make up our new Fishery wardens team here at Eyebrook. Also, welcome Peter Bax who joins the Eyebrook Tackle Shop team with Stuart, Sue and Michael.

9th June 2008

With the combination of both an influx of heavy rainfall late last week, and an over productive reservoir eco system which now includes vast number of Pin Fry, fishing conditions are presently very challenging at Eyebrook.

The Eyebrook residents are gorging themselves on Pin fry, Damsel Nymphs and Chironomid and are reluctant to accept the angler’s meagre offerings. Another major factor has been the good old unsettled English weather! But despite the odds, a handful of hardy anglers have continued to catch.

Roy Bennett and Mick Groom of Leicester enjoyed a day afloat, Roy took six fine Rainbows for 12lb 10oz and Mick practised his usual catch and release to take seven superbly conditioned Rainbows on CDC Emergers, off the top.

The English Disabled Fly Fishing Association enjoyed mixed fortunes in their Floating Line Competition mid week, as did The Norfolk Branch of The Salmon and Trout Association, both events were enjoyed by all who attended.

Brian Skey of Aldwinkle boat fished at Norris Dyke and took eight quality Rainbows on Diawl Bach, Brians eight fish weighed 20lb 9oz

.

Tony Speakman of Fazely, Staffs took six fine Rainbows for 17lb 6oz, this bag of fish included a 5lb 6oz specimen. Tony fished at anchor at The Willows with a size 14 Crunchers on a floating line

.

Dave and Inez Buxton of Northampton fished the indicator with Buzzers to take seven superbly conditioned Rainbows that weighed 18lb 3oz from The Cowshed area

.

Gary Wakefield of Ely boat fished at The Black Cabin and took eight Rainbows that tipped the scales to 22lb 8oz; Gary fished a Damsel Nymph and Buzzers.

John Rose of Leicester anchored his boat at The Cowshed and took eight Rainbows on Damsel Nymph and CDC Emergers that weighed 18lb 8oz.

Loddington WI try Fly Fishing

Members of Loddington WI enjoyed an afternoon/ evening at the fishery recently to put into practice some tuition with resident coach Andy Miller.

Members from Loddington Women’s Institute enjoyed an afternoons fishing following theory and casting tuition by Eyebrooks resident instructor Andy Miller, the ladies will return for some boat fishing later on in the season.

Salmon Saturday held on 8th June 2008 was hailed a great success by organiser Stuart Illsley of The Eyebrook Tackle Shop. Anglers talked Salmon Fishing and inspected the latest state of the art Salmon Fishing Tackle and casting instructor Chris Woodward was kept busy with angler’s fine-tuning their Spey casts.

The Eyebrook Trout Fishery and The Eyebrook Tackle Shop will be attending The 50th CLA Gamefair at Blenheim Palace on 25th-27th July 2008, ”Weather Permitting” a great event, and not to be missed.

Rules and Etiquette

All Anglers

  1. Catch and release means exercising care and consideration as well as respect for your quarry. In order to do this please.
    1. Use barbless hooks.
    2. Use wet hands with minimal handling of fish.
    3. Do not remove fish from the water.
    4. Use a fine mesh net (micro-mesh).
    5. Use a catch and release tool.
  2. Hurry the fish to the net: do not play it for any length of time as lactic acid levels will build and the fish may die.
  3. Beached fish must not be returned to the water.
  4. If a fish is bleeding from the gills, it’s only fair that it is despatched. Chances are it will not survive.
  5. If you intend to release your fish, don’t use static boobies or a sinking line. A deep hooked fish is unlikely to survive.
  6. Do not release near weed. A stressed fish will often look for cover and become entangled.
  7. Bag limits must be strictly observed – refer to Permits.
  8. You must only use artificial flies. However if you are dapping you can also use natural flies.
  9. Anglers are allowed to fish with one rod only.
  10. Anglers must not use keep nets, floats, spinners, plugs, spoons or any form of groundbait.
  11. No live or dead baits.
  12. Anglers must not gut, scale or clean fish into the reservoir or onto the banks. There is no gutting facility at the fishery.

You must only use artificial flies. However if you are dapping you can also use natural flies.

All Boat Anglers

  1. Keep at least 50 metres from any bank anglers. Bank anglers must not fish too close to boat anglers who are already positioned near the bank.
  2. Give other boats plenty of clearance (25 metres min.).
  3. Do not drift on a course, which will interfere with boats already anchored, or anchor in the path of a boat which is already drifting.
  4. Do not travel, anchor or beach a boat too close to bank anglers.
  5. A maximum of three persons are allowed in one boat, only two of whom may fish at any one time.
  6. Rules broken by one person in a boat, shall reflect on all people within the boat.
  7. The Fishery Warden may withhold boats in bad weather.
  8. Boats must be returned to the pontoons or landing stages by the time that fishing ends (times are shown in the fishing lodge). Anglers who return their boats late may be refused permits or access to the reservoir in the future.
  9. Boats must be returned in clean and tidy condition.
  10. Trailing, trawling or trolling are not allowed.
