30th May 2008

Hi All   This evening I went to Rutland to try my luck as you do, the place that I fished was the bay just up from stocky bay on the north side, wind just blowing from the north west to a stand still.

One or two fish rising for the buzzers that were hatching, My setup was a floating line a 20ft leader with a booby on the point and a buzzer on the first dropper and a diawl bach on the second dropper, Washing line method. First cast and a rainbow at 4lbs 15ozs on the buzzer, to my surprise my next cast saw another rainbow to the net this one was over 3lbs, this one took the booby The next four fish came in over the next hour another on the booby and three to the diawl bach in all 6 fish for 16lbs 8ozs. now that was good fishing. This might be a stot in the dark but I found a pair of glasses on the bank at the point were I fished If by any chance you read this contact me or the fishing lodge at Rutland Water.

29th May 2008.

I visited Rutland water last night for a spot of pleasure fishing from the bank and what a night, with fish rising all over the lake and feeding on buzzers BLK, Diawl bach green or red, very small pheasant tails size 14, GRHE again size 14, sedges, olives and CDC. My floating line was in overdrive with a pull nearly every cast. After two hours my arm was so stiff that I had to pack it in, 27 fish to the net upto 5lbs and very healthy, good quailty sample. best regards peter

Rutland water

Good Afternoon Ziggy,

May I thank you on behalf of
myself and my good friend Michael McCloskey for our day out on the
water yesterday. We were both thrilled to catch excellent quality trout
on small flies and floating lines, a method of which we have always
enjoyed. We had a total of eleven fish between the three of us for
around 32 pound in weight and lost another three so good sport on a
bright day. For some reason the photograph of both of us with the trout
on the grassbank seems to have not come out but please find attached
some of the other photos I took. Some are a bit blurred but hopefully
there is something of use for the website.

                                      Best Regards,

Stuart Harrison.

Grafham Water

Dear Ziggy

Your latest report on Grafham is glowing, but it is not all great. My daughter and I fished from 2 - 7pm last Friday (2 May). It was bright, very light to non existent breeze. we saw only 2 fish rise and we had only one pull each. One was hooked but lost. Otherwise the lake seemed dead. I saw a couple of fish caught from one boat, but all others in sight were not catching. We fished a variety of flies including green and black tadpoles (gold head), orange fritz lures, buzzers etc, and at a range of depths from floating lines to fast sinkers (booby tried with latter for a while). But that is fishing.

cheers Tony

28th april

Rutland water this past week has really come into it's own, with both bank and boat anglers catching at will. on Friday I saw one angler take 32 fish on buzzers in three hours, his best fish weighed in at just over 5lbs and the average was around 3 lbs.

Ziggy.

27th April

Guys,   Just wanted to let you know about an excellent and very enjoyable session I had at Grafham on Saturday 26 April. Limit. All on Floater. Bloodworm point and small buzzers on droppers. From anchored boat 70 yards off Hedge End point.

All rainbow

1 at 5lb 4ozs

2 at 4lb 8ozs

1 at 4lb

2 at 3 lbs

2 stockies around 2lb.   All the overwintered fish in really top condition - looked like fresh run salmon.       Great site by the way and much appreciated. We use it religiously for the fishing reports.

Ravensthorpe Reservoir

The pre-season Pike Fishing at Ravensthorpe (18-22 February) produced three fish over thirty pounds.   The best fish of the week, a massive 37½lb Pike, was taken on Thursday by John Hart.  John, from Harpole, boat fished a half Mackerel off Monger's Point.  John's boat partner Mathew Woodruff, had a fish of 16½lb on the same day.  Steve Marshall of Wellingborough also used Mackerel to take a whopping 31½lb pike. Other fish were reported at 30½lb and three in the twenty pound bracket.  There were six in their teens and a number of single figure fish.

Preview of 2008 season

We celebrated our first winner of 2008 before the season had even started. From the weekly returns submitted by our season ticket holders we hold an annual draw. Susan Noble, a familiar face behind the counter at Rutland Water Fishing Lodge, drew the winning return. The lucky winner was 2007 Economy season ticket holder Tim O’Brien. Tim wins a valuable Gold season ticket.

Ravensthorpe Reservoir opening day Saturday 1 March
The recent pre season pike fishing was a great success with plenty of trout spotted in the reservoir. The trout took little interest on Tuesday and Wednesday when the weather was bitterly cold, but they were back again in large numbers in the warmer conditions on Friday, boding well for the start of the new trout season on Saturday 1 March.

Demand for boats often outstrips supply – pre-booking is essential.
For boat bookings and enquiries please call 01604 770875.

Pitsford Water opening day Friday 7 March
The 2008 season promises to be a cracker. Senior warden Nathan Clayton recalls the start to 2007 “The 5.4 rod average and excellent weather meant that anglers had a terrific start and prospects for 2008 look just as good”.
Anglers are reminded that winter restrictions apply at Pitsford with no fishing in the ‘small half’ until 1 April.

Grafham Water opening day Friday 14 March
Grafham Water opens on Friday14 March. Anglers can fish for the New Lodge Trophy for the biggest fish caught on Opening Day.

National Fishing Week Dates Announced

'All encompassing' is the theme behind this year's National Fishing Week. That's the clear message from the organisers as the dates for the festival of fishing were confirmed as 19th - 27th July 2008.

"We want to embrace all disciplines of the sport, and to this end it was crucial that we secured the help of the Angling Development Board to achieve this", said Sean O'Driscoll, Chairman of the Angling Trades Association, one of the main sponsors of the event.

"I am pleased to confirm that the Environment Agency has also shown its willingness to get heavily involved once again, and following on from the great work by Neill Sellers over the past four years I am delighted to welcome the Get Hooked on Fishing team to project manage this years event," continued Sean.

Now in its 15th year, National Fishing Week has introduced tens of thousands of newcomers to the sport, and is recognised as critical to the sport's development and future.

Anglian Water Fulling Mill International 2008
We are pleased to launch the 2008 series of our international fly-fishing championship.  There are heats at 11 top fisheries throughout the British Isles with a date and venue to suit most teams.

The event is for teams of six anglers and will be restricted to the first 166 teams to enter (approx 1000 anglers).  It will follow the same popular format as 2007 with teams entering qualifying rounds and national finals.  The prestigious two day International Final will be fished at Rutland Water on 30 September and 1 October culminating in the presentation evening on the final day.

Jon Marshall, Fisheries Manager for Anglian Water said “With our sponsors Fulling Mill we will ensure that the prize and hospitality fund throughout the competition will reach £30,000.  The silver salver first presented in 1982, the Water Aid trophy (for the biggest fish) and the Overseas Trophy (best placed overseas team) will be presented at our presentation dinner, the best in UK fly-fishing.”

The entry fee this year will be £99 per team of 6 and, new for this year, we are offering a 25% discount on the entry fee for a second team (£74.25)

As before, we will be donating £1 to WaterAid for every competitor who enters.  So far, in the five years we have been running the Anglian Water Fulling Mill International, nearly £4,000 has been raised for the WaterAid charity.

You can read all about last year’s winners in our Hooked! 2008 magazine, when it is published in February – just ask us for a copy if you are not already on our mailing list.

Team captains are encouraged to get their entries in quickly to avoid disappointment. The calendar of events, application form and rules for the competition are printed in Hooked 2008! Or ….

20th January 2008

Hello all,   The third and final weekend of coarse fishing has just ended with, yes, you've guessed it - no coarse fish being caught! Two pike were reported to have followed lures but that's as close as we've come. Disappointing given the large head of good fish known to be in the reservoir but maybe no surprise that the trout get to the baits first & make the most of a 'free lunch'.   Plenty of trout were taken to 6Ib and only one had to be killed which was badly Cormorant damaged. Very encouraging to see so many well conditioned fish to start the new season. The trout season begins at 7.30am on Friday February 1st and a good turnout is expected - weather permitting of course.   Stocking will commence in the week leading up to opening to ensure a good start. The new fishery webcam will be launched on the website during that week and a shop selling a few specialist clothing, smoking and food products will be added soon.   Looking forward to seeing you all,   Jason Foster

Sport England invests in future for angling coaching

Jackie Sheldon, Senior Development Manager for the Angling Development Board has successfully bid for £40,000 from Sport England to develop the current Level 1 and 2 Angling Coaching qualifications. The funding will enable the development recognized coaching qualifications for the whole of the UK.

The ADB have been working in partnership with Scottish and Welsh angling governing bodies and sports coach UK to co-ordinate the development of coaching across the Home Nations. All angling governing bodies have now signed up to the new UK Coaching Framework and the UK Coaching Certificate. Consequently angling is now included within Sports Coach UK new re-categorisation of sport.

Since its formation last April the Angling Development Board has more than doubled the funding for the development of angling to nearly £400,000 over the next three years. After setting up the ADB, sport England increased overall funding to £250,000, The Environment Agency has agreed to contribute £20,000 for the development program and Sport England have recently agreed to fund the appointment of a Regional Development Officer until 2010.

Already the ADB has been using this money to get results. Last week the organization announced the appointment of Darren Birch as Regional Implementation Officer for the North of England to work on the delivery of the club, coaching, volunteer, equity, child protection and education development through the angling network. The ADB is already in talks with major partners to match fund post in other parts of the country.

Darren Birch is a regular angler and has a sound sports development background. Darren is currently the North West Regional Officer for the English Federation of Disability Sport and has also previously worked for Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust as Disability Sports Development Officer. This has involved developing effective partnerships with National Governing Bodies, County Sports Partnerships, Local Authorities and local voluntary clubs to increase participation in sport.

Jackie Sheldon stated that, “this is an important and exciting time for the development and recognition of angling. It will enable angling to develop the UK Coaching Certificate for the sport and ensure a consistent approach to coaching across the UK. Darren will be a great addition to the team and his extensive experience will enable the ADB to support angling at grass roots level”.

Matt Holt, Client Manager for Sport England commented, “Sport England is pleased to support the ADB in its development of UKCC for angling. This will help raise coaching standards within the sport. In addition we look forward to working in partnership with the ADB in the coming year to help achieve our objectives of increasing and sustaining participation, and creating excellence in community sport.”

David Moore, Chair of the ADB added, ‘’At a time when winning support for non-olympic sports has been under threat we are very encouraged to have such good backing from Sport England and its chief executive Jennie Price. One of the strengths of angling is the opportunities it offers everyone in society to be active and the availability of good quality coaches is vital to increasing participation.’’

1. The Angling Development Board (ADB) is company limited by guarantee that was formed in April 2007 to protect and develop the interests of angling and recreational fisheries in the UK.

2. The ADB encompasses the work undertaken hitherto by the Joint Angling Development Board (JADB) to increase participation in angling, encourage licensed coaching and volunteering and the development of angling clubs. Its subscribing members are:-

· National Federation of Anglers (NFA)
· National Federation of Sea Anglers (NFSA)
· Salmon & Trout Association (S&TA)

3. Nationally there are over 4 million anglers spending at least £3.5BN per annum on angling and fisheries related issues, a huge contribution to the national economy which helps to sustain rural communities and supports tens of thousands of jobs. Anglers directly contribute circa £20 million per annum towards environmental enhancement and fisheries management through rod licences sales in England and Wales.

4. The sport of angling is recognised by Sport England and the Government as offering key benefits to society through participation in a healthy outdoor activity. It predominately funds the work of the ADB with some additional financial input from the Environment Agency in support of its Strategy for Angling 2015

5. Angling caters for every cross-section of the community irrespective of age, gender, race, physical ability, mental ability or social standing. Through pro-active coaching and development programmes we are helping to educate youngsters about the skills required in everyday life, as well as the current issues that affect our sport and how they can participate and contribute to the development of angling.

Canadian Record Pike - 55lbs?

This fish was caught it at Michelle Lake in Canada . The angler was fishing and caught a 36" Pike - as he was reeling it in, a 56" Pike took the fish. He brought them both in on the same net - 55lbs - 56 inches.
