Llyn Brenig Fishing Report Week Ending 13/07/08

The weather this week has been mild with the occasional shower, there has been a gentle northwesterly breeze blowing for most of the week. The water temperature is still around 13 C.

The rod average has risen this week to 3.6 fish per angler. There have been some big fish coming out this week. With the best fish going to Mr J Rogers of Denbigh who had a lovely rainbow trout for 7lb 2oz.

The best bag of the week went to Les Jones who had a great bag for 29lb 8oz.

Mr R.J Japheth of Caernarfon also had a good day and took home 6 fish for 25lb 4oz. Mr Dave Watson of Wrexham also had a good day and took 6 fish home for 22lb.

The boat hotspots of the week seem to be, north end around Barrow Island and off the ring of stones, off Hafod Lom, the Visitor Centre, and finally in Tower Bay. The bank hotspots of the week are Nantglyn Bank, Tower Bay, between the Sailing Club and the Visitor Centre and down the arm.

The best method this week seems to be intermediate lines. But as there has been a lot of cloud cover it might be a chance to use floating lines with dry flies.

Tip of the week is to use a heavier leader as there are some big fish in there and they are fighting hard!

The top flies this week seem to be Montana, Viva, Cormorants, Cats Whiskers, Gold Heads, Nymphs, Buzzers, Orange Boobies and a collection of Lures.

Llyn Brenig Fishing Report Weekending 06/07/08
This week the weather has been unsettled, there has been a strong breeze that has moved around to the east. This has brought short heavy showers. The water temperature is around 13 C.
On Saturday we hosted the Anglian Water welsh heat. The weather was better than forecast. The competitors all seemed to struggle with the rod average for the day being only 1.5. Congratulations to the Claret Dabblers of Northern Ireland who won the heat with a total of 20 fish weighing in at 42lb 3oz.

The best fish of the day was 9lb 12oz and went to Greg White of the Emerald Islanders.

The best bag of the day went to John Roberts of Adail Ty-Nant who had 6 fish for 15lb 3oz.
Following a number of breakdowns, we have spent in excess of 10K in the last week to purchase two new engines for our patrol boats. In addition new boats and engines have been ordered and the telephone contact number for the rangers office is being installed in each boat.
The rod average has dropped greatly this week to 2.5 fish per angler. The best bag of the week went to Mr I. Walker of Widnes who had 5 fish for 12lb 1oz. Mr John Rogers of Denbigh also had a good day and took home 6 fish for 12lb, the largest weighing in at 4lb 8oz. Mr P.J. Horlock of Oswestry also had a good day and went home with 6 fish for 11lb 2oz.
The boat hotspots of the week seem to be the north end off the ring of stones and around barrow island, also down the end of the arm and sailing club. The bank hotspots of the week seem to be sailing club, between the visitor centre and the dam and as always Nantglyn Bank. The best method seems to be, on the bank intermediate lines fished at 40 yards with a couple of flies, and for the boats it seems to be intermediate or sinking lines with a long leader with a couple of flies.
Flies of the week are orange boobies, diawl Bach, Buzzers, Gold Heads, Ace Of Spades,Viva, Cormorants, Bibio, Black and Green Boobies and a collection of lures.

Roberts also from Malpas also had a good day and went home with 6 fish for 15lb 8oz this also included 2 fish weighing 4lb each.

The bank hotspots this week seem to be the Sailing Club, Nantglyn bank, between the sailing club and the dam.

The best method this week seems to be sinking lines fished with a short leader with a single fly on the end, or intermediate lines fished with a longer leader with 2 or 3 flies tied in the washing line configuration.

You will find catch return boxes at the exits from the estate, the fishermans carpark and gutting room.

There have been quite a few changes at Llyn Brenig in the last 12 months. Claire Whitely has moved to a new role. As a former Ranger and more recently Contracts Manager I have stepped into the role of Site Controller.  Alwyn Roberts is our new Fisheries Co-ordinator for the whole of Wales.  Alwyn’s new role will include enhancing Dwr Cymru Welsh Water fisheries throughout Wales.  A three year programme is being implemented to increase stocking numbers at Llyn Brenig and other DCWW reservoirs. Congratulations also to Alwyn for qualifying for a place in the Welsh Fishing Team this year.
