Northumbrian water fishing reports 2008

7 July 2008

CATCH OF THE CENTURY

Huge rainbow trout will be stocked into a Northumbrian Water reservoir this month (July) to celebrate its 100th anniversary.

Captors of the five monster trout – which will each weigh between 15 and 20 pounds – will land special and valuable prizes.

The names of the anglers who catch the five giant trout at Fontburn reservoir, near Rothbury, Northumberland, will go into a draw.

First name out of the hat will win a season ticket for next year for all Northumbrian Water fisheries worth £695.

Luxury log cabin weekend breaks at Leaplish in Kielder Water & Forest Park will be won by the next three names drawn.

And the final lucky angler will win a free family day’s fishing at any Northumbrian Water premier fishery.

Fontburn Ranger, Will Lovat, said: “We think this competition will be popular with the regular customers and also help create some new interest in fishing at the reservoir.

“Fontburn has a reputation for big fish but these beauties should be the biggest by far caught at the reservoir this season.”

The competition will run from 14 July to 31 August. Terms and conditions apply to the prizes on offer and winners photographs may be used for promotional purposes.

Ranger's review:
The elements have taken it's toll on cow green this week
with the reservoir being lightly fished,  high wind's combined with heavy
shower's have proved to be a formidable opponent for the upland brown trout angler.
A change in the weather should see this wonderful fishery respond in a positive way

Ranger's review:
The fish are still adjusting to the change in water temperature following the huge influx of fresh water after
the recent heavy rain. The fish have migrated to deeper water areas such as The Meadow on the
fly side and Pow Hill next to the Oak Tree on the bait side. Fly anglers are finding the Cats Whisker
the best lure but small traditional flies are becoming much more popular as we expect at this time of
year. When conditions allow the dry fly fishing in the Bay of Plenty is exceptional with Black Hoppers
attracting a lot of fish. Bait anglers are finding ledgered powerbait the best method, especially when fished
in deep areas. Mr Gardener took the fish of the week at 6lb and Mr Clement has one of the catches of the
week which included two fish over 4lb. We now have eight Tiger trout in the reservoir and have 4,000 fish to
stock in the next two weeks so with the promise of a good forecast for the next two weeks angling prospects
are looking great!

Flash Gordon claims WaterAid Title!!!!!

On a dull but warm April Morning, 67 expectant anglers took to the waters’ edge at Derwent reservoir to take part in the annual Water Aid Angling Competition sponsored by Hardy Greys. This is a keenly contested competition, with £600 of Hardy Greys tackle vouchers up for grabs, as well as a season permit for 2009 donated by Northumbrian Water.

The light winds provided ideal casting conditions for the fly anglers with several anglers taking fish on their first cast. Bait anglers found the conditions slightly more challenging with the fish seemingly preferring a moving fly to static bait. Nevertheless, catches were numerous, illustrated by a rod average of 3.5 fish per angler, with the fly anglers averaging 4.1 fish.

The rain arrived just as the anglers congregated at the lodge for the greatly anticipated weigh in. Nine anglers had arrived with their eight fish limit and with rumours of a big fish caught just minutes before the end, the tension grew. The rumour was confirmed when Derek Carr proudly dropped a fine 7lb 9oz fish on the scales to claim the prize of £60 of Hardy Greys fishing vouchers.

The overall winner and winner of the fly competition, with five 3lb rainbows among a 20lb 3oz catch, was Gorden Swain from Dipton. Gorden was “Over the moon,” to claim the season permit prize and £100 of Hardy Greys vouchers. Second was Joe Carr with eight fish for 16lb and Third was Mr A Coates with 15lb for 7 fish.

The bait anglers weighed in with less numerous, but bigger fish. Peter Lockeron illustrated this with 6 fish for 12lb to claim First and £100 of Hardy Greys vouchers. Second was Derek Carr and Third was Mr. D Robinson.

It seemed ironic that a full reservoir greeted the anglers on a day that proceeds were donated to WaterAid, a charity that is dedicated to providing clean water to people where water is a scarce commodity. With this in mind we can present a grand total raised on the day of £1398 to WaterAid and hope that the success of this competition will go some way to providing a better life for some of people who live in these less developed parts of the world.

Ranger's review:
The reservoir has now settled after recent flood waters and the fish are once again
beginning to feed. The thinking and roving anglers are having the best success those who
take the time to  locate the fish and vary their tactics have been rewarded well.
Regular Season ticket holder Jack Vout took six fish including 3 1/2 and 4 1/2 lb
rainbows for a total of 17 lb. Another Fontburn regular Peter Clarke caught 8 fish for
21 lb by the jetty with powerbait. Irving Brace had 8 for 19lb and M. Heron took 3
rainbows and 4 blues for a total of 18 1/2 lb.
Ledgering tactics have been working well with brightly coloured power baits combined
with the movement of a worm. Favourite colours have been white and rainbow.
Consett Budgies and Dawsons olives are still managing to attract fish close in
to the banks on intermediate lines with a slow retrieve.
Two of the five 15lb plus rainbows have now been released, but are yet to be
caught. Those fish are part of our centenary celebrations with Fontburn being
100 years old this year, anyone catching one of these beauties can win some
fabulous prizes.

Ranger's review:
Fishing at Grassholme at the present time is what you could call interesting
if the bite's aren’t coming then try a fresh tactic or a fresh location
and your returns will improve. The rod average for the week stand's at 3.4
which by anyone's standard's is very good with the heaviest 8 fish catch weighing in at 18.5lb.
The largest fish recorded this week was taken by Mr D Gray a rainbow
of 4lbs this was caught on the ledger using a combination of magic dust in the
feeder with the new hooker pellet's as the bait.
Best flies:

Hury is providing excellent consistent sport for the fly enthusiast.
There have numerous rainbows and Blues in the 2 to 5lb range featuring in anglers catches.

providing some excellent sport.

Ranger's Review: Monster Brown comes to the net
P.Herron recorded the heaviest brown trout of the season so far at Kielder caught on worm at a weight
of 4lb 7oz. This truly a magnificent fish and one the largest to come from Kielder so far.
Boat angler Ken Donaldson had rainbows of 3lb 4oz and 4lb from the top of the Whickhope Inlet on
a Montana Yellow Fritz, Whickhope has also fished well for worm and multi-bait anglers, anglers
parking on the road opposite the Calvert Trust then walking south on the Lakeside Way to fish the bank
towards the Cruiser Club.
Brian Longstaff who was on holiday at the Caravan Club site at Leaplish Waterside Park caught two
limits on consecutive days fishing at the Beaches Walk at Leaplish.
Rainbow, Silver and Fire Tiger Mepp Spinners have caught well fished in the deeper water off the rocks
at Tower Knowe lower car park and also from the Belling Craggs.

WONDERFUL WATERAID

Five pairs of anglers all caught combined bag limits of 16 fish as Kielder
Water turned on the style for the final of the annual WaterAid charity
fundraiser.

The 28 anglers who had qualified from the two earlier heats caught a total
of 160 fish in the final for a rod average of almost six fish per angler.

Peter Pattinson, Kielder Assistant Operations Manager, who also fished in
the final, said: “These results are yet another example of the fact that
Kielder Water is enjoying its best season for years. It is particularly
satisfying to report on the quality of fishing which is also spread all
round the reservoir.”

Almost £2,000 was raised from the Kielder competitions which takes the
water company’s WaterAid fishing fund total to more than £4,000 this season
with two more events yet to be staged – a bank holiday coarse match at
Whittle Dene in the Tyne Valley on 25 August and a boat pairs competition
in September at the company’s Essex & Suffolk Water Hanningfield trout
fishery.

Kielder WaterAid was supported by Alnwick-based international tackle
company Hardy & Greys which donated generous prize vouchers for the
successful anglers.

The five pairs who ‘bagged up’ were separated by just 1lb 1oz. Winners were
Tom Nelson from Shotley Bridge and partner John Henderson with 16 fish for
24lb.

Two pairs tied for second place with 16 fish for 23lb 3oz. They were Peter
Pattinson from Newcastle and his partner Ray Fothergill and Peter Crowe and
Ernie Craster from Teesside.

Fourth was Blythe Palmer from South Shields with partner Richard Landsbury
(16 fish for 23lb 02oz) and fifth was Phil Wagget from Blaydon and Alistair
Baker from Stanley with 16 fish for 22lb 15oz.

The best fish – a 2lb 3oz rainbow - was caught by Phil Green from Consett
and his partner Ian Lamb.

Peter added: “The only missing ingredient on the day was the big fish which
are there to be caught but didn’t appear for the WaterAid anglers – they
are, however, there for all the other anglers who take the great
opportunity to fish Kielder at its best this season.”

Allan Miller, 18 years of age from Dalmellington, Ayr was the latest lucky
angler to land one of Kielder's golden trout. The magnificent looking fish
weighed 5lb 7oz and was taken from Leaplish Waterside Park on ledgered
multi coloured power bait. The fish made several runs and put up a great
fight before coming to the waiting net of Allan.

This is a magnificent achievement as only 25 golden trout were stocked in
to Kielder Water on the 1st August last year to mark Kielders 25th
anniversary.

William Murphy, Allans grandfather said "I have been coming to Kielder
Water for the past 20 years and the place keeps getting better and better"

William had also caught a lovely rainbow the same day tipping the scales at
5lb 7oz.

If any further information is required please do not hesitate to contact
me.

Many Thanks

Hi,

Please find below a brief summary and results from the second heat of the
Kielder Water WaterAid Pairs Competition.

14 pairs took part in the second heat and the favourable weather Kielder
had been having dramatically changed for the competition day with anglers
greeted with high wind conditions teamed with heavy down pours. This making
hard conditions for the day ahead. However the Kielder fish were in a
taking mood and providing you found a sheltered spot you would find the
fish. A final rod average for the day of 2.8 fish per person made for a
tight finish with seven final places up for grabs.

Tactics for the day involved intermediate lines coupled with orange blobs,
cats whiskers and despite the windy conditions a good percentage of fish
were taken on traditional wet flies. Top areas for the competition were the
Belling and Tower Knowe.

The top seven teams qualify for the final on the 20th July 2008.

1st - David Carrick and John Armstrong (11 fish for 19lb 12oz)

2nd - Alistair Baker and Phil Wagget (11 fish for 19lb 9oz)

3rd - Brian Lillie and Phil Rippon (9 fish for 16lb 15oz)

4th - Darren Howie and Bill Renton (11 fish for 16lb 5oz)

Kielder on 4 June:

Jack Charlton Comp 2008 - Thomas Barwick 4lb 4oz.

13 pairs took part in the first heat and were greeted with fantastic
weather for sunbathing however the Kielder fish were still very keen to
take the fly. There was a great rod average of 4 fish per angler with fish
well spread out over the reservoir. It was great to see lots of over
wintered fish in catches with the largest fish of the day weighing in at
3lb 15oz.

The top seven teams qualify to fish the final on the 20th July 2008.

1st - Peter Pattinson and Ray Fothergil (15 fish for 24lb 12oz)

2nd - Peter Crowe and Ernie Craster (14 fish for 24lb 8oz)

Ranger's review:
As in the past couple of weeks the feeding patterns of the fish have been unpredictable.
Most anglers have found that early mornings and late afternoons have been the best times
The introduction of a further 700 rainbows mid week livened up the resident fish and some
good catches were recorded. During the course of the week 11 fish of around 3lbs were
netted and several limits of 19lbs to 20lbs were reported. The west end of the Dam Wall
and around the Disabled jetty were the best locations. Bait anglers had the most success
using worm and or dark green powerbait. Fly fishermen also had the best results at the
west end of the wall. Floating lines teamed with a variety of wet patterns, blacks in particular
produced several good catches. Anglers trying spinning has become more popular and with
some good results. Several fish around the 3lbs mark were recorded
The best rainbow of the week at 5lbs was landed by a member of a school group, who
were visiting Scaling in conjunction with the Get Hooked On Fishing scheme. They all
had a very enjoyable day.
