Sport: A sunny yet windy day here at stocks, also a little quiet with just three boats on the water but what a day they’ve had cumbrian angler John Forster had the top catch of 10 fish with a five fish limit weighing 10lb 12oz he found the northern shallows especially productive fishing mini lures and a green pea over the newly flooded areas. Also on the boats Pete Maltby and friend Tim also found the northern shallows productive on green and black lures. From the bank Mr Priestman had top rod with five fish on a sinking line and pink boobies. This weather is set to stay and get warmer so the fish should start looking up again for some exciting surface sort. And a final note tonight just as i am writing this report Bill Orrell has just brought in a cracking 12lb brownie(see below)  Tight lines Pete

Sport: A bright and breezy day made for challenging fishing with the best of the action from the boats that drifted. Top rod today was Jim hunter with seven fish who found his fish deep with a di5 and a booby but also from the boats Dave Pinner managed to find his two trout on a black gnat so the fish where also high in the water and looking up for their food. From the bank Rudolph Quigliana and Bryn Hart shared top honours with five fish each Rudolph caught his fish from the dam area on a Loch Ordy and an Olive Bumble, his five fish limit weighed in at 10lb.with a lot more settled weather on the way the week the fishing is definitely hotting up. Sport: The fishing has been pretty tough today with only a few anglers on the water its pretty hard to gage what could be the best approach. Nevertheless Bill Orrell managed 11 fish, 4 rainbows and 7 browns. Bill found that a Montana nymph with a black classic Fm on the point was what the trout were after. Fishing from Bell Point working his way back to the lodge seemed his best choice.

With threes and fours coming from the boats it seems that black also is the key colour.

A pretty good forecast for the weekend so there should be some good sport.

With the reservoir stocked twice, this weekend should bring some good scores.

Sport: With the weather as it was today it is not surprising there were only 5 anglers out today and with no boats out on the water all the action came from the bank. Ray Entwistle and David Stocker both landed 4 fish each with Ray taking his fish on a fritz lure from the jetty area whilst David caught his fish from the other side of the reservoir on the east bank. Our very own Matt Taylor went out for an hour after work and landed a total of 7 trout on a blob, with all his fish coming in a frantic 15 min spell, he then fished on for a further 45 mins without even a pull! Funny old game, fishing. Hopefully the weather will improve for tomorrow. See you on the water Paul.

Sport: Rob Denson arrived early this morning and headed straight for the east bank. With a perfect breeze he was able to orcastrate some super drifting, keeping his flies in the margins from Hallstead’s right down to Curry’s proved irresistible to the trout taking a whopping 17 fish all on Soldier Palmers! The other 4 fish came to various wets, all fished nice and slow on a floating line. Good angling once again Rob!

Both John Goodwin and Mick Cartlidge had a red-letter day with 40 fish to their boat!! Split 20, 20 they couldn’t ask for more. Their tactic was to keep tight in to Willow Island both the right hand side and the left. Taking almost all their fish on an Octopus their rods were bent double all day especially when a 8lb rainbow grabbed John’s fly! Both guys found the fish in the top of the water with nothing more than a midge tip needed. Some fantastic action on the boats today with only wets tight in doing the business.

A little quieter of the bank with scores of three and four being commonplace. And guess what was doing the damage? Wets fished slow tight in. So my advice for the next couple of days is to stand a good few foot up the banking so as not to spook them fish that seem to be over that freshly flooded ground.

What a belting day thing’s are getting very, very good indeed!

Season starts Saturday 23rd of February 2008. Open daily 8.00am to dusk.

STOCKS RESERVOIR 2008

The new season is almost upon us and the prospects for Stocks look fantastic. Never before have we had such a good size range of rainbows, browns and blues. In addition to the usual quality 2-4lb trout and the famous Stocks doubles we will be introducing many more 4-7lb fish. We have found that trout in this size range possess a superior combination of speed, strength and stamina, which makes them the perfect quarry for fly fishing. The pre-season stocking of 4000 trout will be spread around the water so many areas will fish well from the first day on February 23rd. The stocking areas are shown on the Hotspots map.

BELTING BROWNIES
This years brown trout are the best I have ever seen, they are very vigorous, beautifully marked and well finned. We have many more than in previous seasons plus record breaking specimens. 2008 will be remembered for its colossal and quality browns!

PRIZE TAGGED TROUT
Throughout the 2008 season there will be a number prize tagged trout released into the reservoir. Any tagged trout caught must be taken and brought to the fishing lodge in order to claim the bounty. To get the season off to a flying start we have already stocked 10 of these prize fish.

Tight Lines. Ben Dobson

Also I would like to draw your attention to the Northern fly fishing its good place to stocks up for the season ahead!

The Open day Fishing report on Stocks

Report by Ben Date: Saturday 24th February

Best Rainbow 13lbs 8oz Dan Taylor from Northallerton
Best Brown 11lbs Peter Kirk from Manchester
Best Blue Many at 3lbs
Best Catch 48 fish for Ray Sanders from Hyde
Best Bag 5 trout for 25lbs Alex Lee from Preston
Bank Rod Av 8.4
Boat Rod Av 8.0
No. Doubles 18, YES 18!
Sport: Wow!! If I wrote about all the fishy stories today this report would be like War and Peace, so I have selected just a few. As an overall picture 129 returns showed that 1066 trout were caught, of which 723 were carefully returned. There were 18 trout landed that were over 10lbs and many more around the 7 to 8lb mark. Perhaps the fish of the day was captured by Peter Kirk. Peter was fishing from a drifting boat close to the shore in the Northern Shallows when something tore off with his fly. The fish ran him ragged for about 15 minutes until it finally succumbed to the net. To his surprise it was a fin perfect over-wintered 11lb brown trout. After a quick photo it was released to fight another day. Peters boat partner Steve Philips also landed an 11lb 8oz rainbow which was hooked just 100m further up the Northern shore.
At the start of the day the trout were high in the water and Masterline Stocks anglers Andy Hooper and Sam Ball were enjoying good sport drifting the margins along the Willows, the Northern Shallows and Willow Island. There was a good hatch of large buzzers and trout were topping sipping the emerging insects. Although they were tempted to try dries they were catching well on a Di3 with boobies and mini lures. In the afternoon the wind picked up and the takes got fewer so they switched to a faster sinker with the same flies. Their hunch proved to be correct the trout had gone down and they were getting the takes again. They said most of there fish taken were close into the shoreline and hard on the bottom and it was their top dropper, the deepest fly, that took biggest tally. They finished a great day with 20 trout a piece. Peter Andrews and Stuart Mcahee also had the same score and also found most of their trout deep down. The largest trout of the day was also taken from the boats a cracking 13lb 8oz rainbow took 20 minutes to land after it was hooked by Dan Taylor from the middle of Newclose Bay.
On the shore the bank anglers were also enjoying the good sport. Hollins Bay was producing arm aching action for many and the first double figure trout of the season was expertly landed by 10 year old Alex Preston from Lancaster. Ray Sanders was the top rod with 48 trout. Ray was fishing near Two Trees on a floating line and his most deadly pattern was the ever effective weighted cats whisker. We saw a lot of specimen fish today and a lot of good catches and they were taken from all over the western shoreline from the top end of Newclose Bay at Cowbell Wood all the way down to Grindys Lawn at the Dam. Hopefully the great sport will continue into March. Tight Lines Ben.

Here is a list of all the new doubles club members. (photos to follow) Dan Taylor 13lb 8oz, Antony Hooley, Jim McKinlay & Andy Barker 13lbs, Laurence Phelan, Jim Pickford & Shaun Dodd 12lbs 8oz, James Gallagher 12lbs 4oz, Thomas Oman 12lbs 2oz, Alex Preston and A. Grabham 12lbs, Ian Weston and Des Ashcroft 11lbs 12oz, Rudolph Quigliany and Steve Philips 11lbs 8oz, S Ball 11lbs 7oz, Granville Watson 11lbs 5oz, Peter Kirk 11lbs.

21th February 2007

Hi Just a quick update on progress with just a few days to go.

We will have completed the stocking of the reservoir by Wednesday lunchtime, specimens and all. We have stocked at The Dam, The Alders, Hollins Bay and The Causeway. The trout are spreading very quickly along the shores and we have already spotted them hundreds of meters away from where they were released so you will be able to wander afar by the weekend.
Today was glorious at Stocks, it was flat calm, buzzers were hatching in good numbers and I have never seen so many over-wintered fish feeding this early before. They were definitely not the newly stocked fish as they were miles away from the stocking areas. If you fancy targeting them we observed good numbers feeding trout over the Main Basin, Haighs Hollow, The Willows and Currys Cast.
This season is already way ahead of itself, the water temperature is 7 degrees centigrade, buzzers are hatching, Paul saw some olives this morning and the first toads have started to emerge, which we dont usually see until the end of March.
So if you are visiting stocks in the coming weeks I strongly advise you bring a box of nymphs and maybe a small selection of dries in addition to the usual early season lures.

The Competition Rules

1. The competition will be fished from drifting boats loch style but with fishery rules applying to flies and fly sizes.

2. Competitors must sign in on morning of match to signify that they have read and understood the match rules.

3. Boat seats and thwart board seats are allowed but must not be more than five inches above level of the gunnels.

4. All matches will be fished to the catch limit of the water with time bonus taking affect thereafter. This is a boat limit not an individual limit.

5. Both anglers are allowed to fish until the boat limit is reached where upon they must return to the jetty and get the score card signed and finishing time agreed by the match official.

6. Each angler is only allowed to use one rod at a time , not exceeding 12 feet in length ,, but they will be entitled to have in the boat with them, a spare rod (length as before) - both rods, however, not to be mounted at the same time. A rod is considered to be mounted if any two sections are joined or if a reel or line is attached.

7. No form of shooting head line, metal core line or metal core braided leader is permitted.

8. The fly size is dictated by the fishery so gold heads lead heads are allowed. However no tandems or treble hooks allowed.

9. A competitor's rod when working flies or retrieving cast must be above water level. Competitors must not stand in the boat when casting or retrieving line.
Competitors may stand when playing a fish.

10. The boat must drift square onto the wind with both anglers fishing in front of the boat (Down wind). Trolling of flies behind the boat is not permitted whether the boat is drifting or being driven by motor or oars. Side casting is permitted but flies must not be allowed to trail behind the boat.

11. Drogues may be used (of Para design) but must be of no more than 6 foot by 6 foot, ropes no longer than 12 feet.

12. The anchoring of boats when fishing is prohibited. Boats must be allowed to drift freely when fishing.

13. During the match, no boat may encroach within a distance of 100 yards in front of another boat from which competitors are fishing. All boats must also keep a minimum of 50 meters away from any bank angler.

14. Mobile telephones may be taken afloat but must be turned off and may only be used for emergency purposes. Fish finding devices are also banned from use during the day of the competition.

15. Competitors are advised to wear buoyancy aids and eye protection when either travelling in, or fishing from, boats. At some fisheries this is compulsory and all competitors must adhere to the rule. In the event of dangerous weather conditions, or any other circumstances, the Match Organiser may alter the start time and change the hours of fishing to whatever he and the Fishery Management feel is in the best interests of the competitors. This might mean that the match will be postponed and held at a later date.

16. The Match Organiser will agree with the manager of the water the team bag limit for the match. A Time Bonus system will be employed and will operate as follows As soon as the boat limit is achieved the anglers must make their way back to the jetty where their score card will be signed and time recorded by the match official or fishery staff. Bonus will be 2lb per hour (down to a quarter of an hour)

17. Sin Bin- In the event of any boat breaking the rules then the sin bin will come into operation. This will mean that the boats catch will be confiscated and the boat will spend 1 hour on the jetty before they are allowed to go back fishing.

18. There may be call for the organisers to amend the rules for some reason if so the match organisers decision will be final and binding.

19. The number of qualifiers from each heat will depend upon the level of entry at that venue.

Stocks Reservoir

The reports have come to an end for another season. I hope you have enjoyed fishing on Stocks this year, where we’ve enjoyed brilliant sport throughout the vast majority of the season, the back end was hard work. This was due to the regular significant increases in level which never allowed the water to settle.

This season we saw the return of Paul Bebb to the fishery as a guide which has proved a huge success. I am pleased to say that Paul will be offering his services throughout next season.

Sadly we bid Peter a fond farewell as he starts his estate agency career. During his time at Stocks he been a valued member of the fishery team and has made many friends. I'm sure we will still see him regularly on the fishery and we wish him all the best for the future.

We will now be looking for a new team member to join myself and David for next season.

Next season will open on Saturday February 24th and close at the end of November. The reservoir will be fully stocked with top quality trout. I am particularly exited about the specimens and 3 to 4lb fish, they are belters! We will also be stocking 1000's more trout late on in the season to boost the sport at the extended back end.

Gift vouchers and season tickets for next season are available for Christmas presents by calling Stocks on 01200 446602.

Bank House Fly Fishery is currently fishing really well and will remain open throughout the winter. I hope to see you there.

We will be setting up an online tackle shop over the course of the winter which you may find useful.

We are always looking for ways to further improve the service we offer at Stocks and would welcome your suggestions by e-mail.

There will be more news to follow and further analysis of the 2006 season.

Merry Christmas and Tight Lines

Ben Dobson

‘Fisherman’s Tale’

Hi, I have been to your fishery a few times over the years but last Sunday was one to remember for a long time, I now know what Scott of the Antarctic felt like. When we set out from Liverpool there was a thin layer of snow down here, but when we came into Clitheroe an hour

Later, a blizzard just came from know where and engulfed us in the car. I had to change my two back tyres of my Audi estate onto the front and drop all the tyre pressures to get what grip I could, but however when we arrived in Waddington I came down a hill sideways on a sheet of ice and I thought that was the end of my car and me. I did try and turn around and go back home at that stage but I couldn’t get back up the hill that I just came down. My friends and me sat there for 20 minutes and discussed how we where going to tell the misses back home that we where stranded. Anyway I said we should give it another shot and try and get to the fishery, so we set of again and luckily enough we arrived at 8.30 and the days fishing was great, until put my new rod down that I had bought the day before, to get a cup of soup and then it happened…! It took off like an exerset missile and disappeared under the water for about 2 minutes and then reappeared about 15 meters away, sticking up about 2 foot out of the water, so we pulled the anchor up and set a course for my rod, as I grabbed it I could feel the fish was still on, it took me about 5 minutes to play the fish in, it was a lovely 4lb 5oz

Rainbow. The fish were taking all day long and giving some really hard fights, but my last cast of the day brought me a fish that I was never expecting, as soon as it took my white fritz it nearly Pulled my arm out of its socket, I retrieved line very quickly until I saw the fish and the fish saw me and then all hell broke lose, it was throwing me around the boat like a rag doll, I have never had a fish fight so hard and so long, what more could I have asked for out of a days fishing. I hope to be back up next weekend with a few more friends and a 4x4 this time.

See you soon,

                                              PAUL BAINES.
