Thornton Fishing Report week ending 21/02/10



The shift in the wind & an icy cold snowy blast towards the end of the week took its toll on the fishing last week with 75 rods catching 207 trout returning 113 for a rod average 2.8, in reality still excellent fishing considering the conditions.

The shallows of the Thornton arm, wood bank & down towards the lonesome pine continue to be the best area to try with the bank anglers once again enjoying the best of the sport with the trout running tight on the shallows. Best of the fishing has been 10.00am - 3.00pm the warmest part of the day

We are still seeing a number of overwintered trout taken with the best this past week taken by season permit holder Wayne Newby 4lb rainbow.

I recommend you keep in touch with the lodge if your planning a visit as this cold blast were experiencing this week may cause the reservoir to have ice on it once again.

Boat anglers in particular need to check the weather as we will not permit anyone on the pontoon or out in the boats until any early morning ice has gone this on occasion has resulted in the boats not going out before 10.00am or even later & on the odd occasion not at all, this can be frustrating for you the customers however we are having a proper winter, one were not used too, please bear this in mind when your visiting the fishery & allow the staff to make the right decisions based on daily weather conditions to ensure your safety.

Thornton Reservoir fishing report week ending 14/02/10

Despite the cold Thornton continues to produce excellent catches with the 81 rods who braved last weeks weather been rewarded with a catch of 689 trout returning 481 for an excellent rod average of 8.5 superb fishing when you consider the water temperature is struggling to get above 3 degrees & the bitterly cold wind that blew at times.

The shallows of the Thornton Arm & wood bank are the most productive areas to fish although at times the stretch of bank from the lonesome pine to the farm bank has also fished well with a higher majority of the overwintered fish taken coming from this area.

We are also seeing a higher number of overwintered fish 3lb+ been caught this year, with the best this week at 5lb taken by season permit holder M. Jackson.

The trout are tight in the shallows no wading is required, if you do wade all your doing is pushing the fish out, keep on the bank & expect the takes to be as your preparing to lift off to re-cast.

Cats whiskers, green pea, tadpole, bloodworm, damsel & buzzers have all been good patterns this past week, concentrate your fishing to the warmest part of the day 9.30am - 3.00pm.

Regarding the boats if there is a frost in the morning we will not open the pontoon or allow the boats out until he ice in them has thawed, this on occasion has taken until 10.00am!

Thornton Fishery Report week ending 07/02/2010
An opening week dominated by the weather with anglers on opening day arriving to find part of the reservoir still covered by ice & due to the freezing conditions the boats were not allowed out until the pontoon & boats had thawed which was 10.30am

However we enjoyed an excellent opening week with 111 rods catching 506 trout returning 343 for a rod average of 4.6 As is usual at Thornton this time of year the shallows & the margins along the Thornton Arm, wood, Markfield arm & farm bank produced best with bank anglers enjoying the best of the sport with cats whiskers, damsel, blob & black & green tadpole been the most productive patterns to use.

It would seem despite a hard winter our stock from last year has overwintered well with a number of 3lb+ overwintered trout taking as well as a 4lb4oz by Adam Gunby, 5lb1oz by Paddy Fitch & the best of the season so far 7lb8oz rainbow taken by Roger Miles.
