143 anglers caught 556 fish rod average 3.89

I risk sounding repetitive when I say once again..... a changeable week with very varied weather - frequent wind direction changes, heavy showers, bright sun and stormy conditions.   Bank sport has been ok fishing the deeper bank areas, from the north west corner around to the black pipe. The shallower and therefore more weedy area along the boat ramp bank is holding alot of fish, fishing along the bank on the inside of the weedbed is best. Washing line with a small booby 'sacrificed' in the weed leaving a couple of nymphs or buzzers hanging is best.   Damsel nymphs and large and small hare's ear nymphs, amber nymph, corixa and black & peacocks all worth a go. A few fish deep down from the boats in the daytime on white or orange boobies.   Fantastic evening sport late on, post 9pm most nights, on dry sedge patterns, foamy Shipman's and hoppers.   Best rainbow this week taken by John Robson from Driffield. The 7Ib 12oz fish took a black wet fly, similar to a Pennell.

I've attached a photograph of another recently caught rainbow of 6Ib to Damion Shackleton from Lincoln on a Cat's Whisker.

TOFT PHONE - Hopefully back to normal this week !!   FREE BOAT MONDAY offer available !! Boats should be booked prior to arrival and you MUST mention FBM to qualify !

NATIONAL FISHING WEEK - this coming week. Tomorrow, Monday 21st July we will be holding an induction day with coaches on hand to offer help and tuition to newcomers to the sport. Even if you've been at it for a while and feel that your casting skill is lacking, please come along, they may be able to help? There will be a laser shooting setup for you to have a crack at whilst you have a breather from casting. The event has been advertised within the National Fishing Week campaign and we're hoping for a decent turn out.   Jason Foster

A changeable week once again with very varied weather - frequent wind direction changes, heavy showers, bright sun and stormy conditions.   Bank sport has been ok fishing the deeper bank areas, from the north west corner around to the black pipe. The shallower and therefore more weedy area along the boat ramp bank is holding alot of fish, fishing along the bank on the inside of the weedbed is best.   Damsel nymphs and large caddis imitations are good, teamed with sedge pupae patterns or buzzers. Try a small cat's whisker as a last resort!   Boats fishing best during the day with a variety of patterns including some small lure and booby patterns fished deep.   Fantastic evening sport late on, post 9pm most nights, on dry sedge patterns, foamy Shipman's and hoppers.   Best rainbow this week taken by Malcolm Janik from Spilsby, he took 14 fish on Thursday evening on small hare's ear nymphs including two rainbows at 6Ib's !   TOFT PHONE - landline and broadband down at the moment - yes, I have paid the bill. I'm currently moving from Talk Talk to BT and it was to be a seemless transition. However, Talk Talk pulled the plug early which has left me with no service. All being well cameras and phone will be back online within a week or so. Please contact me on my mobile in the meantime, thank you !

122 anglers caught 638 fish rod average 5.23

A good week with many individual catches of 10+ fish on catch & release with Mr. Normington being top rod taking 28 fish from the bank. A few overcast days have meant plenty of top of the water sport. Fish responding very well to sedge patterns and emergers when they're up. On brighter days the boats have been best - fishing claret, grey or green buzzers very deep down. Damsel nymphs, stickflies, large hares ear caddis patterns and small fry imitations have been the best from the bank during the day. A few fish too on orange fritz lures as a last resort.   Evening sport very good and hots up towards dark, loads of sedges early evening and large brown buzzers late on. Grenadier, foamy Shipman's, Silver Invicta and Dunkelds all good fished loch style from the boats. Dry sedge patterns, hares ear nymph variations and ginger emergers good from the bank. Best rainbow 6Ib to Matt Powell from Lincoln.   With the weather looking unsettled for the next few days, I would expect sport to remain good - we don't want too much sunshine !!

112 anglers caught 428 fish rod average 3.82

I know I risk sounding repetitive when I say it's been a mixed week again in unsettled weather! A very windy couple of days to start the week followed by mostly bright and blustery days have slowed daytime activity.   Lots of sedges around now so try weighted caddis patterns, hares ears, PTN's and stickflies as point flies and brown or green buzzers on the droppers. Pin fry are plentiful along the shallower and therefore more weedy area of the boat ramp and south bank. Try a Butcher or similar 'flashy' wet fly to tempt the fry feeders.   Best bank area is from the north west corner, right along the north bank and around to the black pipe. Boats best drifting with the fish being active and well spread across the middle. In the evening fish sedge patterns and Shipman's buzzers for best results.   Quite a few fish caught this week to 4Ib 8oz and a stocking with fish up to 8Ib carried out.

111 anglers caught 364 fish rod average 3.3

A mixed week this week with sport very much influenced by conditions. On hot and bright days the boats now have the advantage as fish move out into deeper, cooler water and feed on snails, corixa, caddis and damsels. The bank has seen some excellent sport on dries and sub surface patterns when overcast skies have prevailed. Grenadiers, hoppers, soldier palmer and G&H sedges have been very good in the afternoon/ evening. Buzzer hatches have slowed a little and sedge hatches are beginning to increase.   Best rainbow of the week was to Michael Jellis of West Sussex at 5Ib 2oz and the best individual catch goes to Andrew High from Sleaford who managed 17 fish. He fished from an anchored boat and took his fish on deep, static buzzers - his first 2 fish killed weighed 9Ib together !   Tomorrow will be my first anniversary of being back at Toft. A very speedy year and I have to say it's great to be here, re-kindling old friendships and dealing with happy anglers (mostly) !! Business has dramatically increased in the last 12 months as I think you all feel more settled now - knowing stability and careful management are now in place. I'd like to thank you for your continued support and together we'll ensure Toft has a future.   As a thanks to my customers - FREE BOAT MONDAY starts tomorrow !!   What a week!! Near spot on conditions throughout the whole week, warm, overcast days ideal for fishing, with few bright periods. Therefore plenty of fish on or near the surface with CDC dries, nymphs and buzzers of many types proving successful. No particular best area as the wind has been very changeable - again, some days turning 360 degrees. Washing line method has been good, fishing a small booby on the point with a couple of buzzers or diawl bachs hanging.   Bank has fished well but plenty of fish showing further out now, so it's time to get drifting loch style with teams of wets for some exciting sport, especially in the evenings.

Best rainbow of the week was caught by Toft part time bailiff and local hero Pete Cowan from Scunthorpe at 6Ib 2oz, I've attached a photo of the handsome beast.

Toft Open bank match sponsored by FIRE CONTAINMENT LTD. - THE RESULTS.....   This fishing competition with the generous sponsorship of FIRE CONTAINMENT LTD is unprecedented in it's prize fund for any one day event. A fantastic opportunity for an angler to arrive at a fishery, pay just £35 and have a chance to take home a £1000 prize. I had limited places to 60 and expected them all to be filled but sadly that didn't happen, however a great bunch of 45 anglers did take part and competed in this 'different' match. The rules were that an angler could kill any 6 fish and then stop fishing. There were many tactics suggested on what would be the best way to go and this left the whole thing open to a gamble that might or more to the point might not, pay off!?   June 7th turned out to be an ideal fishing day with warm overcast skies and light northerly variable winds. The match was fished from 2pm to 8pm with anglers drawing for peg numbers and moving around the reservoir every hour and a quarter. Most fish on the day were caught very near the surface, some on small boobies and some on small dries. The first anglers who had decided to kill their fish early and take a gamble finished fishing at around 5pm and retired to the fishery office for a beer (or two). The majority fished on for the duration with four or five fish in the bag and hoped for a big fish late on.   So, to the results...   1st went to visiting Midlands angler Mark Haycock who picked up the Toft Open trophy and a cheque for £1,000 with 6 fish for 12Ib 15oz including a rainbow of 4Ib 3oz 2nd John Littler from Sutton in Ashfield who fishes Toft regularly and is part of the ToftTrout.com fishing team - 6 fish for 12Ib 7oz secured him a cheque for £600 3rd Neil Deakin from Sutton in Ashfield, again a Toft regular and ToftTrout.com member - 6 fish for 12Ib 2oz - picked up £400   Best fish was a rainbow of 5ib 2oz to Michael Jellis from West Sussex caught in the last five minutes. Michael received a fishing reel and spool donated by Andy at the Lincolnshire fly shop at Waltham.   I'm sure I speak on behalf of all of the anglers who took apart when I say a big THANK YOU to Dave Sheriff and Firecon LTD for their support and I hope this is the just the beginning of further exciting events to be held at Toft.

Excellent week this week with lots of top of the water sport in recent days. The strong north east winds of bank holiday weekend decreased and shifted early in the week and near perfect conditions have prevailed since. Lighter and warmer winds have meant lots of fish feeding near the surface, responding well to CDC dries, foamy Shipman's buzzers, emergers and buzzers fished on the 'washing line'.
Banks good as long as it's cloudy, if not, jump in a boat and head out. Evenings very good with mainly buzzers coming off but a few sedges now showing, so sport will begin to get even better as the sedge hatches increase. Look to fish traditional sedge patterns such as the invicta range, soldier palmers, grenadiers and don't forget the dry G&H, a must in the Toft anglers fly box !
Plenty more good rainbows again, best 8Ib's to Mr. Shaw-Browne.

The good rod average maintained despite the north east wind sticking with us. Bright and breezy afternoons continue to keep the fish down and weighted buzzers fished on floaters from the black pipe to the north east corner working best. Plenty of fish down in the wind but on most days proving hard to reach. Boat sport generally better than the bank as the fish tend to be shoaling 25 to 50 yards out. Trevor Ward top individual catch.....again..... with 25 fish taken on his own buzzer patterns fished deep from a boat.   Evening rises a bit hit and miss the last few days as the strong, cool wind has not let up much going in to dark - however sport does definitely hot up during the last couple of hours.   Several good rainbows again, best 6Ib's to Dave Holroyd from Wrawby taken on a buzzer

97 anglers caught 479 fish rod average 4.9

An improved rod average this week perhaps due to a return of more overcast and cooler conditions? The north east wind cotinues to prevail which seems to be keeping the fish down a little. A few fish near the surface but most feeding 6' to 16' down. Floating lines teamed with large buzzers very effective, fished beneath an indicator from the bank or fished around on the drift from the boats.   Despite the cold evenings the fish are still rising well but late on, lots of large olive and black buzzers coming off. Best rainbow this week goes to Walt Ridley from Hull at 7Ib's taken on a Shipman's buzzer from a boat.

Nottingham angler Dave McGeever top catch of the week - 30 fish taken on deep buzzers from a boat.

A warm and bright week this week, nice to be out in but not ideal fishing weather. Daytime sport has been surprisingly good, especially for the boat anglers. Fish feeding 40 to 70 yards out are a little out of reach of most bank men. Buzzers fished on floating lines and 20 foot + leaders have been very successful. Most effective method is to fish a large, heavy buzzer on the point with a couple of droppers - just cast out & slowly retrieved or left static. Olive, black & red best.   As you'd imagine during such a warm spell, the evening rises have been excellent, so if you are intending to fish on a brighter day, then plan to stay late if possible. The fish move very close in to the banks in the evening with lots of buzzers hatching of all shapes and sizes. Small dries and emergers very good when the fish are active.   It's been a very good week for the 3Ib+ book this week. Best rainbow has been 8Ib to Lincoln angler Ken Slone taken on a buzzer, there's been several others 6Ib+ and I've attached a photograph of Neil McElwee from Derby with a cracking wintered rainbow of 7Ib 4oz also taken on a buzzer.

Some of you may remember Neil from many years ago, when he was being shown the ropes at Toft by the late John Faulkner, himself one of the most accomplished 'buzzer men' I ever recall at the fishery.   Trevor Ward from Dinnington had the best catch this week, 45 fish taken right through the day fishing his top secret buzzer patterns from a boat. He could show you, but he'd have to kill you !

Please don't forget the Toft Open Bank Match, it's a great opportunity for anglers of all abilities to have a crack at winning a grand ! If it's well supported then I'm sure it will become an annual event with a growing prize fund. There's no other one off match that I know of nationally that offers a 1k prize! So, to all of those anglers that thought they might give it a go, please do! We'll be fishing to a 6 fish limit - with fish selection being allowed and No time bonus. The winner will be decided by the heaviest dead weight of fish. Sponsored by FIRE CONTAINMENT LTD on June 7th. £35 entry - £1,000 first prize. Limited to 60 entrants  - tickets still available.   A brighter week this week has slowed sport somewhat during the day. Cool and blustery easterly winds coupled with clear skies have kept the fish down. Best bet in such conditions is to head downwind and fish small lures or nymphs on an intermediate line or fish a team of heavy buzzers on the cross wind bank.    Evening rises have been excellent, so if you are intending to fish on a brighter day, then plan to stay late if possible. Lots of buzzers hatching of all shapes and sizes. Small dries and emergers very good when the fish are active.   Boat sport beginning to improve over the last few days as milder and more Spring like conditions prevail. Drifting is the best bet with blobs, concrete bowls and boobies fished on a slow sinker when it's bright and small wets and buzzers on the top when they're on the move.

A couple of reminders....   England Ladies beginners day on bank holiday Monday. Qualified casting instructors on hand for a spot of coaching and an informal match taking place from 10am to 4pm for anyone wanting to have a go.  All proceeds go towards the ELFFA team costs. Bring partners and children to have a crack at fly casting.

Weekly results week ending - 25th April

137 anglers caught 718 fish rod average 5.2   A milder and generally more pleasant week with the loss of the north and east winds. Plenty of fish on or near the surface again with dries working very well at times. A few hawthorns starting to show but buzzers being the predominant life.   Olive, brown or olive Shipman's buzzers very good as well as the usual epoxy and slim tied buzzers in black or olive. Small olive lures worth a try if fish are a little deeper. Over the last few days evening sport has begun to liven up with lots of fish showing.   Quite a few fish 4Ib + again this week with the best at 7Ib 3oz to Mr.Martin caught fishing into the wind in the north east corner.

SCIERRA QUALIFIER
A cracking day on Thursday for the first SCIERRA qualifier of the season which was held at Toft. 12 boats and 24 anglers went afloat in an attempt to secure the three places that would qualify them for the final at Rutland Water in August.
The match started at 10 - just as the rain did ! Pete Cowan was the first to catch a fish - within the first 30 seconds !!

Sadly one pair bowed out after just an hour - it was their first time in a boat and you might say that they found it difficult to master. On leaving the boat, one of them stepped off the jetty in to 'thin air' and ended up in the pond - then his buddy broke his rod tip - just too much to take for them!

Boats were well spread across the fishery and most were in to fish almost immediately. The rain disappeared after around an hour and a few hours of dry but blustery conditions ensued with just one more shower in the early afternoon. The sun poked through at around 3pm and the fishing became a little more difficult after then but still odd fish were being picked up right to the final whistle at 6pm.

Jane Lidster (ex England Ladies International) and her boat partner Andy Hutson from the Lincolnshire Fly Shop, Waltham, Grimsby were the first to reach their 16 fish limit and therefore the first boat in at 2.04 pm. Several other boats were soon to follow and all secured healthy 2Ib per remaining hour time bonuses.

Results sheet is posted here http://www.toftnewton.com/images/scierra_results.jpg but in summary ......

22 completed the match and landed 142 fish with an average fish size of 1.67Ib's.

1. Jane Lidster & Andy Hutson 16 fish for 36Ib 14oz
2. Neil Deakin & Les Wardle 16 fish for 36Ib 4oz

3. Andy Clark & Mick Angell going to the final on the wildcard of best fish with a rainbow of 4Ib 8oz

Various methods worked well from floating lines and small Diawl Bachs down to DI 7 lines and fast pulling on lures, boobies & blobs.

Many thanks to all who took part and to Hywel Morgan/SCIERRA for considering Toft as a worthy venue for this now nationally recognised event.   To see the write up by Hywel Morgan visit http://www.svendsen-sports.co.uk/?q=node/4328

Lots of fish on or near the surface with buzzer, nymph and even dry fly sport excellent up until Wednesday. Easterly winds arrived knocking several degrees off temperatures. Fish have continued to feed very well though and luckily have remained on the upwind bank around the black pipe and north east corner areas.   Diawl Bachs, epoxy buzzers, hare's ear nymphs and small Montanas have been the best fished within the top few feet of water.   Quite a few fish 3Ib + again this week with the best at 5Ib going to Hull angler Robin Goldthorpe on a buzzer. More fish to 6Ib stocked next week.   Just one day to note this coming week, the SCIERRA pairs boat competition is being held on Thursday 24th and therefore there will be no boat availability for pleasure anglers on that day.

Weekly results week ending - 11th April

Another excellent week in a once again mixed weather week. Last weekend the return of cold northerly winds made the bank an unpleasant place to be - which affected angler numbers. From Tuesday onwards conditions have been slightly better with variable winds, frosty starts and daytime temperatures to around 10 celsius.   There's been lots of buzzers hatching and during mid week good sport was had dry fly fishing. Other than dries, small black buzzers and Diawl Bach's have once again been the order of the day. Floating lines have sufficed with fish only a few feet down.   Best rainbow this week, a 7Ib fish to Roger Walker from Jacksdale, Nottingham taken on a floating line and a small black buzzer

he was fishing in a Nottinghamshire Police match and took second place, with Dave Stanford taking first with six fish for 14Ib 13oz plus a time bonus.

Remember the Toft Open bank match on June 7th sponsored by Firecon LTD with a £1,000 first prize. The competition will be advertised nationally within the next fortnight, so I would expect places to fill fast. It would be nice to see a healthy number of Toft regulars fishing and it would be even nicer to see one of you win !! Tickets can be reserved and paid for online in the Toft shop at www.toftnewton.com/shop

I've attached a word document detailing a beginners day and friendly fishing match being put on by the England Ladies team at Toft. It's planned for May day, Monday the 5th and all proceeds will go towards funding of the team's events.

A near 'perfect' fishing week this week with milder air and high pressure prevailing. A couple of days were very windy making things difficult to say the least but on the whole conditions have been spot on. Lots of fish on top taking small buzzers and many fish were taken on small dries. Teams of 2 or 3 buzzers fished round in the breeze have been very successful as have Diawl Bachs fished in the same way. Toft regular Pete Cowan from Scunthorpe fished on the south bank just past the boat ramp and landed 20 fish in just a few hours including a rainbow of 3Ib 12oz on his own Diawl Bach tyings.   Fish have been well spread out and the best bet is to head for where the wind is favourable. A good number of decent fish again this week with the best going to Wrawby angler Martin Rowson at 7Ib's on a small orange booby.   Just a couple of boats left for the SCIERRA pairs match at Toft on Thursday 24th April. It will be a friendly day and all anglers will receive a SCIERRA goody bag on entry worth £90 which includes 2 x Fluorocarbon, a SCIERRA trout cool bag, 2 x Hywel Morgan DVD's an HMT flyline and a cap. Another very good week despite the changeable weather. Easter weekend was a disaster, gale force freezing cold winds and 4" of snow on Sunday morning really upset things! A return to more settled weather has meant a return to good fishing. An excellent rod average and some really good fishing on all manner of methods. Buzzers and Diawl Bachs on floating lines have worked well along with small weighted lures fished a few feet down. Dave McGeever from Mansfield took 25 fish on Thursday fishing buzzers all day in the north west corner.

Lots of fish 3Ib+ with the best weighing 5Ib's to Brian Smith from Poynton near Sleaford.(photo attached)

A fantastic rod average-the best that I ever remember at Toft !! For the last 9 days now sport has been exceptional, as I said in last weeks report, it's as if every fish in the place has decided to feed.   The water has cleared and looks in tip top condition and even in the cold and windy weather of the last few days the fish haven't been deterred. Some anglers are fishing teams of buzzers and Diawl Bachs on floating lines and others fishing small lures on intermediates and all are catching. The fish are very well spread with plenty on the upwind banks.   Best fish this week was a rainbow of 7Ib which was weighed and released and caught by Lincoln angler Terry Taylor on a Classic FM 'nymph'.

The Trout Fisherman magazine 2007 Troutmasters Fish-Off was held yesterday and Neil Deakin from Sutton in Ashfield won with his 6 fish bag weighing 14Ib 5oz and including a rainbow of 5Ib 3oz.

. He caught his fish in the first hour and carried on pleasure fishing for the rest of the match catching 30+ more fish ! Neil will represent Toft in the Final at Grafham Water in May and I wish him good luck.   Pity it's such grim weather at the moment but hopefully the great sport will take your mind of it if you decide to turn out.

48 anglers caught 151 fish rod average 3.1

A fantastic finish to a very poor week. Exceptionally strong gale force westerly winds made the majority of last week pretty hard work. Up until Wednesday, only 20 odd fish had been taken with sport extremely dfficult due to the winds and very low atmospheric pressures.

Thursday and Friday with a return to light winds and increasing pressure on the barometer, the fishing has switched on. All anglers enjoyed good sport yesterday with the majority of fish being taken near the surface on buzzer and nymph patterns. Robin Goldthorpe from Hull did the best, taking 17 fish, fishing along the south bank with a team of buzzers drifting round in the ripple.

Best rainbow this week went to boat angler, A.Malt from Lincoln, who had a 5Ib 1oz fish taken on a red buzzer.

59 anglers caught 128 fish rod av. 2.1

Well what a week......the weather has been dominated by unrelenting strong mailny westerly winds with one morning of scattered snow showers and another of minus five frost thrown in!   Far from ideal weather conditions for fishing reflecting in the returns. The majority of fish are downwind and therefore pretty much out of reach. A few fish have been showing around valve tower and in the north west corner and are very close in, so casting along the bank with a floater or intermediate and goldhead lures is a good bet.   Best rainbow of the week goes to Mr.Lowe from Sheffield at 5Ib 8oz.

I've just released news of a bank match to be held at Toft on June 7th. The match has been kindly sponsored by Fire Containment LTD and carries a guaranteed 1st prize of £1,000 cash! There will be further cash prizes and Andy Hutson from The Lincolnshire Shop has generously donated tackle prizes.   The match will be advertised in the national angling press and is limited to 60 places - it would be nice to see a good turn out of Toft regulars for the event, so book early to avoid disappoinment !  Details online at www.toftnewton.com

A pretty good week in far from ideal conditions. Very strong winds have limited fishable areas on some days which reflects in the figures. Quite a few fish around boat ramp area and round from black pipe to north east corner. The fish have been higher in the water the last few days so floating lines teamed with a variety of goldhead lures have produced. Best tactic is to cast along a quiet bank rather than straight out, as fish have been very close in.

Several decent rainbows this week with the best at 5Ib 8oz to Mr. Wooffinden from Nottinghamshire on a black and lime green booby fished in the tower corner.

Nice to see a good turnout at the Newark Flyfishing show this weekend and I look forward to seeing everyone on the bank !!     Jason Foster

week ending - 22nd February

67 anglers caught 244 fish rod av. 3.6

On the whole a very cold week. Night time temperatures to -9 and day time temperatures struggling to reach freezing made for unpleasurable fishing this week. Only the hardiest souls braved the elements and were rewarded with not too bad a time. Sport at the beginning of the week was better in the afternoons at the warmest part of the day with mostly boobies and orange lures fished deep working well. Best areas were north east corner and along the north bank.   The last few days milder weather and strong south west winds have prevailed bringing fish higher in the water, 6-8ft down generally. A few fish around the tower, down along the south bank around to the black pipe. Damsels, Dawson's olives, boobies and orange fritz lures have worked well on intermediate lines.   Best rainbow this week, 3Ib 8oz to Ernie Clark from Laneham.   Jason Foster

13th February 2008

103 anglers caught 444 fish rod av. 4.3

Sport much better this week with settled and quieter weather. Sharp, frosty mornings meant sport was slow to start but picked up late morning and fished right through to dark. Boobies have been very effective this week when fish have been laid up deep, fished in the traditional way on fast sink lines and just 3 or 4 feet leaders.   Dawson's Olive and large damsel 'nymphs' have been good either fished on intermediates or floaters. Plenty of fish around the tower - Mr.Lowe and Mr.Thorpe caught 41 fish yesterday on slow sink lines and olive Zonkers from a boat 20 yards off the tower.   Best bank area has been the North East corner although fish shoaling and moving frequently so if you're not on the fish, give it 20 minutes and then try a different spot.

Best fish this week went to Gary Moore from Hucknall, Notts who took his 6 on a floating line and damsel nymphs including the rainbow of 6Ib 4oz .

Stocking weekly with rainbows 1Ib 8oz+

Just a quick request - Radio Lincolnshire are coming to Toft early tomorrow (Wednesday 13/2) to do a feature on getting youngsters in to fishing. They would like if possible to include a short interview with a parent and junior fisher person. If any of you fancy coming along or can perhaps suggest a suitable parent and young angler, then please get in touch.   As I'm sure you're aware we do need to encourage young anglers into fishing to ensure the survival of our sport.

  Thanks in anticipation,   Jason Foster

Week ending - 8th February

  64 anglers caught 173 fish

The strong cold winds at the beginning of the week made the fishing difficult and unpleasurable, the last few days though, Spring like conditions have brought the anglers out and switched the fish on. A few fish showing around the tower and boat ramp areas but more showing from the black pipe around to the north east corner.   Intermediates and damsels, vivas or montanas a good bet or floating lines and long leaders fish with goldheads about 6 feet down good. The boats have been surprisingly good for early season with fish some days showing 30 yards out plus. The new Toft petrol engines have been well received by the boat men.   A good amount of 3Ib+ fish caught with the best being 5Ib to Paul Martin.   Let's hope this nice weather continues for a little longer yet !!   Stocking weekly with rainbows 1Ib 8oz+

3rd Febuary 2008

Well what a start !!

As is historically typical of my past opening days - the weather took a turn for the worst. Very high winds, freezing temperatures and a sprinkling of snow kept folk away. Just nine anglers braved the conditions and were forced to cram in between the tower and boat ramp - fortunately the stockies were sheltering there too.   Toft regular Mervin White from Bilsthorpe caught the first fish of the Toft season on his third cast, a nice Rainbow of 6Ib

. (Photo attached). He also managed a Rainbow of 3Ib 14oz as part of his 6 fish limit.  Saturday the wind dropped a little but daytime temperatures struggled to stay above freezing, yet the fishing was surprisingly good. Father and son duo, the Holloways, took 19 fish between them fishing intermediate lines and a variety of lures just beyond the boat ramp. Cat's whiskers, Montana nymphs, Viva lures and blobs have all been best this weekend.   Fingers crossed for a bit of less windy and milder weather coming soon, although it is the middle of winter after all!   I'll keep throwing the fish in until it's nice enough for you all to come!

  Regards,

  Jason Foster

20th January 2008

Hello all,   The third and final weekend of coarse fishing has just ended with, yes, you've guessed it - no coarse fish being caught! Two pike were reported to have followed lures but that's as close as we've come. Disappointing given the large head of good fish known to be in the reservoir but maybe no surprise that the trout get to the baits first & make the most of a 'free lunch'.   Plenty of trout were taken to 6Ib and only one had to be killed which was badly Cormorant damaged. Very encouraging to see so many well conditioned fish to start the new season. The trout season begins at 7.30am on Friday February 1st and a good turnout is expected - weather permitting of course.   Stocking will commence in the week leading up to opening to ensure a good start. The new fishery webcam will be launched on the website during that week and a shop selling a few specialist clothing, smoking and food products will be added soon.   Looking forward to seeing you all,   Jason Foster

Toft 'coarse' fishing

Hello all,   Well a reasonable turn out this weekend with plenty of trout caught but sadly no coarse fish. (Well when I say  no coarse fish, that doesn't include the success of a Cormorant that was seen fishing in the North East corner on Sunday afternoon catching plenty of 4" silver fish!).   Toft regular Trevor Ward from Dinnington proved he's a good all rounder and dug his match tackle out to have a go on Saturday. He landed 52 trout to 3Ib's waggler fishing double maggot. Several other anglers managed 20+ but sport was a little slower on Sunday after a sharp frost. Best rainbow reported was around 5Ib's.   Several anglers set their stall out for the pike over the weekend. A near miss was reported by two very experienced Lincoln pike anglers lure fishing from a boat at the back of the tower. They said that a double figure pike followed the lure up to the boat but didn't take, encouraging news for pike anglers over the coming weekends.   Coarse fishing will continue for the next two weekends and trout fishing resumes on Friday February 1st.

  Bye for now,   Jason Foster

Hello All,   I hope you've all had a good Christmas and are looking forward to a Happy New Year?   I thought I'd take this quiet opportunity to let you know about a few Toft related bits.

Toft 2007 figures - from 16th June to 16th December

1990 tickets caught a total of 7528 fish for a rod average of 3.78   3324 fish were killed and 4204 were returned. A total of 5136 fish were stocked.

The figures for me are satisfactory and provide a good basis to start 2008.

Coarse Fishing  We will open for coarse fishing during the trout close season on the first three weekends in January. The 5th & 6th, 12th & 13th, 19th & 20th - each day from 8am to 4pm. The fishery holds a good head of coarse fish and often these are taken on the fly. Perch to 4Ib 8oz, Bream to 10Ib+, Roach to 3Ib+ and Pike to 10Ib have all been recorded in the past. Let's hope a few of them turn up during these trials. Most methods and groundbaiting will be allowed. Live baiting for Pike will not be allowed. Trout will be returned immediately to the water. Coarse fish can be retained in keepnets and will be returned at the end of the day. Cost of a day ticket is £6 and a limited number of boats will be available for hire at a cost of £10 each - these should be reserved.

Trout fly anglers are welcome on the open days and get the chance to fish on catch & release at a discount to the normal £9 a day !

Weekly results week ending - 7th December

  35 rods caught 59 fish.

Colder conditions and at times strong winds hampered the fishing this week as reflected in the poor figures. A couple of anglers managed 6 fish each, one using Diawl Bachs on a floater and the other on boobies on a di-5 !   Best area is along south bank from the boat ramp down to south east corner, with late morning/early afternoon the best time.

  Season closes Sunday December 16th.

Weekly results week ending - 30th November

80 rods caught 425 fish for a rod average of 5.3

Milder weather meant for more pleasant conditions up on the bank and brought anglers out. Fished well on the whole once again with floating lines and Diawl Bachs and buzzers proving successful. Fish generally within the top 5 feet of water and anglers opting for intermediate lines and white or orange lures took fish.   Several nice rainbows around the 5Ib mark and Richard O'Brien from Louth took a lovely well mended rainbow of 4Ib 15oz.(photo attached)

Scunthorpe angler Andy Clark, took the best single catch of the week with 32 fish, taken from a boat on a variety of methods including orange blobs fished on a di-3 line.

Fur & Feather match Sunday December 9th £20 10 fish limit bag. Fishery rules, no pegging - winner best bag weight - start 9am - weigh in by 3.30pm.   Season closes Sunday December 16th.

Weekly results week ending - 23rd November   43 rods caught 305 fish for a rod average of 7.09!   The rod average just keeps going higher ! A mixed week weather wise with some very cold northerly winds and frosty nights BUT the fishing was unhindered by the conditions. On milder afternoons a few fish near the surface still with Diawl Bachs and Black Pennells taking fish. Intermediate and slow sink lines with cat's whiskers, blobs and boobies proving effective when the fish are down. Debi Phillips from Bassingham near Lincoln took the best rainbow this week with a fish of 6Ib 2oz, she fished in the awful wet conditions last weekend and the fish was well deserved ! (photo attached) Still a good amount of 3Ib+ fish showing up, with the increased stocking this season beginning to pay dividends. Martin Rowson from Wrawby had the best days sport, managing 27 fish bank fishing. He caught on a variety of patterns fished on a floating line and took fish where ever he fished, with the fish being well spread out.     Fur & Feather match Sunday December 9th £20 10 fish limit bag. Fishery rules, no pegging - winner best bag weight.   Season closes Sunday December 16th.   FREE BOAT MONDAY promotion on offer!! Quote FBM when booking.   Jason Foster
