Carsington Fishery Report 13th May 2013 Another busy week for the fishery with a whole mixture of weather conditions from bright still days to blustery wet conditions midway through the week. Although this didn’t put of many brave souls who had a great days fishing despite the weather. Don Stazicker one of our casting instructors used the windy conditions of Thursday to shoot a short film giving advice on fly casting in windy conditions. Rod Average The rod average for last week was 6.06 with 570 fish caught by 94 anglers. Best Rainbow/Brown The heaviest rainbow this week was 4lbs 8oz caught by John Mathews. Top Spots The top spots this week have been Shinningford creek, Osprey towers and brown ale bay, halfmoon field, fishtail creek and Upperfileds bay. Method & Flies The most popular fly patterns used this week have been nymphs, buzzers, hares ears, black fritz, orange booby, hot head damsel and gold head montana. Mostly intermediate and floating lines have been used this week. Casting Lessons for Beginners We have our first casting lesson for beginners on Sunday 19th May. This is a great way to get into fly fishing for the first time. It is a 2 hour session and all the equipment will be provided. The cost is £30.00 per head and must be booked in advance; just give the centre a call to book a place. Carsington Fishery Report 6th May 2013 It’s been another great week of fishing with a rod average of 8.74 which is a little higher than last week. The fishing has been very similar to the previous few weeks with many fish being caught on buzzers and nymphs. The weather conditions have been really kind to us this week and all of our boats have been out on the water over the bank holiday weekend. A great catch by Adam & Grant Lockett - Largest Fish 3lbs 12oz Rod Average The rod average for last week was 8.74 with 787 fish caught by 90 anglers. Best Rainbow/Brown The heaviest rainbow this week was 4lbs 3oz caught by Phil Harding on a buzzer. The largest brown at 1lbs 8oz was caught by Paul Pearce. Top Spots The top spots this week have been Shinningford creek, Osprey towers and brown ale bay, halfmoon field, fishtail creek and Upperfileds bay. Method & Flies The most popular fly patterns used this week have been nymphs, buzzers, hares ears, black fritz, orange booby, hot head damsel and gold head montana. Mostly intermediate and floating lines have been used this week. Fish have been caught much closer to the surface with several afternoons seeing fish rising. Carsington Fishery Report 29th April 2013 It’s been a great week of fishing despite the breezy conditions of the weekend. The rod average for this week is a cracking 8.08 which is the highest the rod average has been so far this season. Once again this week many fish have been caught on buzzer and many over wintered fish have been caught especially around Fishtail Creek and Upperfields Bay. It’s been nice to see a few more people out on the water and groups and clubs making returns visits to the fishery. Winner of the Trout Master fish off at Carsington Water - Malcolm Sargeant Rod Average The rod average for last week was 8.08 with 412 fish caught by 51 anglers. Best Rainbow/Brown The heaviest rainbow this week was 4lbs caught by Paul Jowett. The largest brown at 2lbs 8oz was caught on a minky booby off Sailing Club Island by Mark Barnsby. Top Spots The top spots this week have been Shinningford Creek, Osprey Towers and Brown Ale Bay, Halfmoon Field, Fishtail Creek. Upperfields Bay has fish very well over the weekend with many over wintered fish being caught. Method & Flies The most popular fly patterns used this week have been nymphs, buzzers, hares ears, black fritz, orange booby, hot head damsel and gold head montana. Mostly intermediate and floating lines have been used this week. There has been a good sign of natural fly life present during the calmer days. Results of the Trout Master Fish off On Saturday we had the Trout Master fish off for all those anglers who had entered into Trout Master during the 2012 season. Malcolm Sargeant won the competition with a bag weight of 15lbs 2oz for his six fish, he also caught the biggest fish of the competition which was 3lbs 7.5oz. Malcolm is pictured above with his winning catch. It was a great days fishing with all anglers catching their 6 fish by 2pm. Carsington Fishery Report 22nd April 2013 The rod average has stayed fairly constant this week at 6.57. The weather has been much better and the warmer conditions have showed many hatches of fly life. The reports seem to have followed this with reports of floating lines, nymphs and buzzers being used by a number of anglers during the latter part of last week. The weather on Friday evening stayed fairly warm and as the wind dropped the fish began to rise for the first time this season. A number of anglers fishing that evening recorded catches of above 10 fish. More of this weather please! Rod Average The rod average for last week was 6.57 with 309 fish caught by 47 anglers. Best Rainbow/Brown The heaviest rainbow this week was 3lbs 9oz caught by Paul Pearce. Paul also caught the largest brown at 2lbs 9oz both fish were caught on a cats whisker. Top Spots The top spots have been at the north end of the reservoir and around fishtail creek. Shinningford creek, Osprey towers and brown ale bay have had excellent reports. Method & Flies The most popular fly patterns used this week have been nymphs, buzzers, hares ears, black fritz, orange booby, black tadpole & cats whisker. Mostly intermediate and floating lines have been used this week. There has been a good sign of natural fly life present during the warmer periods. Carsington Fishery Report 15th April 2013 Our first Carsington Fishery Spring Open Competition took place on Saturday. We had 12 pairs competing against each other to be the first names on the Carsington competition honours board. We also had two other prize categories for best individual bag weight and the heaviest fish. A great day was had by all and to begin with the the weather was quite kind. The rod average for the competition was 5.34 with 19 anglers catching their 6 fish before 5pm. . Carsington Trout Fishery Spring Open Competition Sat 13th April 2013 Mick Woodhouse & Kev Booker – Winning Pair Dave Swindell – Heaviest fish Mick Woodhouse – Best Individual Bag Rod Average The rod average for last week was 6.82 with 432 fish caught by 62 anglers. Best Rainbow/Brown The heaviest rainbow this week was 3lbs 9oz caught by David Swindell this catch also won the biggest fish prize in our Spring Open Competition. Mr Richardson also caught a similar sized fish recorded on catch return as ‘almost 4lbs’. The heaviest brown was 2lbs 2oz and was caught by Mr R Oldfield also during the Spring Open. Top Spots The top spots have been mostly governed by the weather conditions. The east side has found successful spots during the north easterly winds whereas Saturday saw fish being caught in Shinningford Creek, Brown Ale Bay and the Osprey towers. Method & Flies The most popular fly patterns used this week have still been montana, damsel, black fritz, orange blobs, black tadpole & cormorant patterns. Mostly intermediate lines have been used this week using a fairly slow retrieve. There has been a good sign of natural fly life present during the warmer periods. Carsington Fishery Report 8th April 2013 We were glad for warmer calm conditions over the weekend which saw almost every boat out on the water. It’s great to see more anglers out now that the snow has gone and the rod average has increased to 5.36. We hosted the first of the seasons Carsington Fly Fisher competitions with 22 anglers competing. Tony Smith shown below came first with a total bag weight of 14lb 13oz. Melvyn Wood – 4lbs 2oz Rainbow Tony Smith – Bag weight of 14lb 13oz Rod Average The rod average for this week was 5.36 with 311 fish caught by 58 anglers. Best Rainbow/Brown The heaviest rainbow this week was 6 ½ lbs caught by Ian Ritchie. The heaviest brown this week was 2 ½ lbs caught by Alan Wilton Top Spots Once again the most successful areas have been close to the shorelines. The best areas are Halfmoon Field, Stitch Plantation, Fish tail creek, Upperfields and Millfields. These areas have been the most fishable areas due to a week of North Eastly winds. Method & Flies The most successful patterns are Black lures, orangel booby, green & black fritz, black tadpole and cormorant. Most fish have been caught in deeper areas on intermediate and sinking lines. Carsington Fishery Report 1st April 2013 Fishing has only taken place from Friday onwards this week due to the extreme weather conditions and access to site. Those anglers that have braved the elements have successfully caught giving us a rod average of 4.38.
Good Friday 29th March 2013 2lbs 4oz - Rainbow Seth Grimes, age 11 successfully braving the elements. Rod Average The rod average for this week was 4.38 with 35 fish caught by 8 anglers. Best Rainbow/Brown The heaviest rainbow this week was 2½ lbs caught by many of this week anglers. No browns were recorded this week. Top Spots Once again the most successful areas have been close to the shorelines. The best areas are Towerbank, Osprey Towers, Halfmoon Field, Dam Wall and Millfields. Many returns stated that fish were caught all over showing that it is best not to stay in one place for long. Method & Flies The most successful patterns are Black lures, coral booby, green & black fritz, black tadpole and diawl bach. A mixture of intermediate and floating lines have been used, interestingly some fish have been found closer to the surface than expected and other have been near to the bottom but in shallower depths of water. New Arrival This week we took delivery of our first of three new boats. Following the success of the Coulam Wheellie boat we have ordered three new Coulam 16 boats. People who have used them before will be aware that they are very good on large waters and are slightly larger than our current fleet. This boat will be available for hire from Monday 8th April with the others to follow soon. Carsington Fishery Report 25th March 2013 Despite the snow this week’s rod average is 6.07! Carrying on from the excellent start of opening weekend the water fish well until the snow hit us and access to site was near impossible. Once again a mixture of newly stocked and over wintered fish were caught and many being over 3lbs. One of our boats had 40 plus fish to their boat through the day quoting that it had been a ‘Great Day’ ! Rod Average The rod average for the opening weekend was 6.07 with 91 fish caught by 15 anglers. Best Rainbow/Brown The heaviest rainbow this week was 3¾lbs caught by Mr D J Webber. No browns were recorded this week. Top Spots Once again the most successful areas have been close to the shorelines. The best areas are Towerbank, Shiningford creek, Stitch Plantation and between Watersport and Sailing club islands. Carsington Spring Open Competition – Sat 13th April Carsington is a great venue for Fly fishing competitions and so for the 2013 season we have decided to organise one of our own on Sat 13th April. The Carsington Spring Open competition is aimed at all anglers who enjoy a day’s boat fishing with a friend. It will be an organised event based on two people per boat with an individual bag limit of 6 fish. Prizes will be awarded for the winning pair with the heaviest collective bag and a number of individual prizes. The cost of entry will be £60.00 per boat including permits and boat hire. Carsington Fishery Report Opening Weekend 18th March 2013 A cracking start to the 2013 season with a rod average of 7.03! Despite the blizzard conditions at the start of the week the weather was very kind to us for opening weekend. Lots of fish were caught with many being around 3lbs and many over wintered fish including browns being recorded. During the slightly warmer conditions of Saturday afternoon it was good to see a few buzzer hatches which encouraged a few fish to the surface. A sample of fish caught on Saturday by Mr Anderson, the largest was 3lbs. Rod Average The rod average for the opening weekend was 7.03 with 267 fish caught by 38 anglers. Best Rainbow/Brown The heaviest rainbow this week was 3½ lbs caught by Harry Stevens. The heaviest brown caught this week was 1¼ lbs, caught by Paul Pearce Top Spots As expected the most successful areas have been close to the shorelines. On Saturday most fish were caught towards the north end of the reservoir. On Sunday reports were coming of fish being found in pods all over. The best areas are Towerbank, Shiningford creek, Halfmoon field and between Watersport and Sailing club islands. Method & Flies The most successful patterns are Black lures, orange booby, cormorant, and damsels. A mixture of intermediate and floating lines have been used, interestingly some fish have been found closer to the surface than expected and other have been near to the bottom but in shallower depths of water. Tuesday 12th March 2013 We Open This Weekend! Just a quick email to remind you all that we open for the 2013 season on Saturday. Currently all the boats are booked for opening day however we have a few left for the Sunday and the following week. Stocking has been taking place over the past few weeks and will continue weekly. Lets hope that this spell of cold weather doesn't send the fish to deep.
