Weekly Fishing Report 8th to 14th April 2013 Trout taken1020 (2285) Rod returns219 (617) Fish per rod4.65 (3.70) The Eyebrook Trout Fishery is on top form with many limit bags being taken from both the bank and boats presenting a cracking rod average of six fish per rod. The England Ladies Fly Fishing Association held a fund raising day at Eyebrook recently, which was deemed a huge success by ELFA and Eyebrook staff. A raffle was well supported and refreshments served, eventual winners on the day were Paul and Sue Sissons who took sixteen rainbows; many more limits were taken but Sue and Paul took top honours with 31lb. All area’s of the reservoir are fishing well for boat anglers but the margins of the shallows at Stoke Dry are really producing the goods with some exceptional quality rainbows including a few over wintered specimens. The Bull Fly fishers led by Charlie McCormack enjoyed their recent Eyebrook boat outing with many members catching limit bags. Bull Fly fisher Clinton Slingsby of Lincoln took a super rainbow of 9lb 6oz on a Montana nymph from the Willows area, the best fish of there outing. Stuart Hardy of Leicester fished Black Cruncher nymphs from an anchored boat off Stoke Dry and took eight fine rainbows; Stuart also reported loosing a rainbow estimated to weigh in excess of 14lb. The bank fishing at Eyebrook is superb with many limit bags being caught both from the Rutland bank at the Willows or Robbo’s Cabin and the Leicestershire bank, especially The Chestnut Tree and Cowshed. Pavle Knezevic of Corby fished from the bank at Robbo’s Cabin and took four decent rainbows on a Gold head Montana nymph and Black and Red Buzzer; Pavle returned five more on catch and release. The best method of catching a fish or two at the moment is to use a floating line with a fifteen foot leader and a couple of flies such as a Gold Head Montana nymph on the point and a small Black Buzzer on the dropper as demonstrated by Pavle; remember to retrieve your flies as slowly as possible. Weekly Fishing Report 28thMarch till 1st April 2013 Trout taken 812 Rod returns 287 Fish per rod 2.82 Visiting anglers endured freezing weather conditions as the Eyebrook Trout Fishery 2013 fishing season got underway. Members of staff welcomed new as well as stalwart members back to Eyebrook for the new fishing season. Visitors were treated to hot bacon and sausage rolls as well as soup served later in the day to thaw out many frozen anglers. The cold weather conditions and poor water clarity dictated that the fishing was going to be slow and indeed up until mid morning it certainly was, come the warmth of the day (I say that very much tongue in cheek) the fish began to feed. Bill Stewart of Corby was one of the first bank anglers off the mark at the Three Trees with a pretty stockfish that weighed about 2lb taken on a Sweeney Todd, proving yet again that some older fly patterns still deserve a place in the fly box. Visiting angler from Dalbeattie, Jim Penny took a fine limit of eight rainbows that weighed 19lb from the bank at The Willows; Jim’s best fish weighed 5lb 6oz and were all taken on a small home tied Gold Headed Buzzer, Jim returned the following day and took another limit bag from the bank just above Robbo’s Cabin. Season ticket holder Malcolm Broughton of Grantham enjoyed his morning session and took six quality rainbows for 12lb from the wooded bank. Dave Etty of Kettering opted to fish the bank at Sams Dyke and was duly rewarded with five rainbows for 10lb 4oz, Dave also returned to the fishery the next day and took another five rainbows on a Montana Nymph including a fine 6lb 2oz specimen. Neil Hutchins of Corby was also extremely happy with his opening day catch of five rainbows for 10lb. Nick Lamyman of Belchford was the winner of a complimentary season ticket for 2013; Nick has since put his ticket to good use as he took seven decent rainbows for 14lb from the wooded bank. Colin and Clint Jackson of Crowland enjoyed good boat sport fishing nymphs on floating lines off Oliver’s Copse, the pair took ten fighting fit rainbows for 20lb Season ticket holder Dave Shaer of Peterborough boat fished off Pollards Jump and took six superb rainbows and returned a five more. The Paisley Patterns Fly Fishers once again graced the waters of the Eyebrook from north of the border and enjoyed steady sport during their three-day visit. It’s April Fools Day and despite the very cold weather conditions, the reservoir is fishing very well, especially from the bank above Robbo’s Cabin to the Willows. The best method of catching a fish or two at the moment is to use a floating line with a fifteen foot leader and a couple of flies such as a Gold Head Montana nymph on the point and a small Black and Green Tadpole on the dropper, remember to retrieve these as slowly as possible. Eyebrook fishermen would like to re establish our Eyebrook Fly Fishers Club so if you are interested in joining please contact the fishing lodge on 01536 772930 to register your interest. Tony Pointer of Corby boat fished, anchored near to the Valve Tower, and took some superb rainbows on a Cats Whisker fished on an intermediate line. FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE 2012 BOAT FISHING SEASON AT EYEBROOK, THE FISHERY WILL BE OFFERING FULL DAY MOTOR BOATS FOR £18 AND HALF DAY MOTOR BOATS FOR £10, NORMAL DAY PERMITS STILL APPLY The most successful fly patterns at present include Damsel Nymph, Black Holo Buzzers, Pheasant Tail Nymph, Diawl Bach, Crunchers, Gold Ribbed Hares Ear Nymph, and Silver Invicta. By far the best tactics for both bank and boat are dry flies, which are taking plenty of top quality grown on fish, patterns such as Fiery Brown Bobs Bits, Brown Daddies and CDC Emergers are taking many superb grown on fish. In much brighter conditions, simply fish the same patterns on an Intermediate line. Floating fry patterns such as Suspender Minkies, Ethafoam Fry and Spondoolie’s are also accounting for some superb grown on trout. If it’s fry feeders that your after, look no further. The Leicestershire bank, especially The Bell and The Hawthorns are fishing extremely well and huge shoals of Roach and Perch fry have been finding refuge in the weed beds. Many bank anglers are encountering top quality grown on rainbows between 4-5lb in weight that are generally full of Roach and Perch fry as well as Sticklebacks, bring out the Polystickle’s, for those of you who remember them! Weekly Fishing Report 22nd to 26th March 2012 Trout taken 937 Rod returns215 Fish per rod 4.35 A fabulous start to the 2012-fishing season here at Eyebrook and some super bags of quality rainbows to boot. Opening day at Eyebrook Trout Fishery and after a misty start the sun eventually broke through and the fish began to take. The heaviest bag on opening day fell to Market Harborough season ticket holder Bob Margery, Bob chose to boat fish with a Black and green Tadpole and later returned to the fishing lodge with eight rainbows that tipped the scales to 34lb 8oz. The heaviest rainbow of the season, a fine fish of 13lb 5oz was caught by Ian Borland of Paisley, Ian was visiting the fishery on a 3day package with nine of his friends from the Glasgow area, who between them over the course of the 3 day’s recorded a catch of some five hundred fish. Tony Miki of London boat fished at Stoke Dry and took three fine rainbows on a Black and Green Tadpole. John Thomson of Corby boat fished and took a fine bag of rainbows for 23lb 15oz, John’s bag included specimens of 5lb 9oz and 4lb 5oz. Ian Campbell and Jonathan Jarman enjoyed great day boat fishing and took limit bags each with Jonathan including rainbows of 8lb and 6lb 8oz in his catch. Numerous anglers, both bank and boat recorded bag limits and it was apparent that a lot of the fish taken were between 3-4lb and in superb condition. The heaviest rainbow taken form the bank on the first day weighed 8lb 1oz and was taken by season ticket holder Dave Lawrence of Little Bowden. Simon Findlay of Corby took eight fish from the bank for 15lb and dedicated his catch to his granddad, John Adamson, who sadly passed away recently. Dave Adkins of Newbridge opted to fish from his float tube and took a limit bag on Black and Green Tadpoles for 24lb 2oz; Dave also returned another eight fish. Successful fly patterns include Black and Green Tadpoles, Cats Whiskers, Black Holo Buzzers and Jungle Cock Diawl Bach. Boats have been consistent and are catching along the Leicestershire bank from the Chestnut tree to The Cowshed. Due to low water levels at the fishery and a duty of care to our visiting anglers only the Rutland side and the Dam wall are open to bank anglers, but both have produced good numbers of super fit quality rainbows. For more fishery information visit the Eyebrook’s website at www.eyebrook.com Andy Miller A look ahead to 2012 The Eyebrook Trout Fishery is proud to be associated with three of the finest fish farmers in the UK; they are Exe Valley Fishery, The River Gwash Trout Farm Ltd and Westacre Trout Farm. Together, our fish farmers have assured us that they will continue to supply the Eyebrook with top quality trout the same as which have been introduced into the fishery in more recent years. As well as pre-season stockings the Eyebrook Trout Fishery will once again continue with regular stockings of quality trout throughout the fishing season, all of these fish will be introduced at points around the entire fishery. The prospect of catching a fine, super fit, grown on Eyebrook rainbow or brown trout is a thought to savour and these fish are quite capable of stripping an anglers reel down to its backing in double quick time.
More recent seasons have seen the introduction of generally larger trout ranging from 3lb to 4lb into the fishery; this has become evident with the average size of fish now caught at Eyebrook standing at 2lb 11oz. In the last two years triploid brown trout have been introduced into the fishery and have made an interesting talking point for anglers who have been fortunate enough to encounter these spirited fighters. Surprisingly, and rather interestingly, these fish have been caught at all levels of the water column and were just as likely to engulf an angler’s dry fly or buzzer fished near to the surface, as they were to fall to a deep fished lure. The larger majority of brown trout caught have been safely returned to the water unharmed to grow into much larger specimens, a policy that is now wholly encouraged at the fishery, these fish should hopefully grow on and offer tremendous sport to anglers in the future. Although this fishery is classed as a put and take commercial Stillwater, many fishermen now consider the Eyebrook, and the stamp of fish encountered here, as the nearest an angler will get to a totally wild trout fishery without the need to travel to the western isles of Scotland or beyond, praise indeed. Eyebrook offers the game fisherman superb early season bank fishing, and using fly patterns such as Black and green Nomads, Montana nymphs, Black buzzers and Diawl bach fished very slowly on floating or intermediate lines, anglers should enjoy some superb action.
For mid season, boat fishing comes into its own, and Damsel Imitations, Bloodworm, Gold ribbed hares ear nymph and many older wet flies patterns such as Ginger Quill, Black and Peacock spider, Silver Invicta and Wingless Wickhams will account for many superb Eyebrook trout.
As of previous seasons, and proving yet again that the Eyebrook is indeed the venue for top of the water action, dry flies such as Cdc emerger’s, Hoppers and Daddies will often account for top quality grown on or even over- wintered specimens from both the bank and boats. Marginal weed growth during the summer can hamper bank fishing at Eyebrook but fishery staff and contractors work hard each year to keep the bank relatively weed free resulting in ample bank fishing available each season. Massive numbers of Roach and Perch fry had congregated around the boat pontoons and Dam at the latter end of the 2011 season, with a massive food source like this the resident Eyebrook trout are sure to thrive and offer some fantastic sport to the game angler in 2012, predation permitting!
During the 2011 season it was most encouraging how many new novice anglers were attracted to the Eyebrook, and indeed many youngsters participated and showed an interest accompanied by their adult counterparts. Although many double figure fish were taken during 2011 the heaviest rainbow caught during the season was a fine specimen of 14lb 12oz that fell to the rod of Bourne angler Adrian McCarten; Adrian receives a much-coveted limited edition Eyebrook big fish trophy. The existing record for a Brown trout caught at Eyebrook reservoir had stood since 1955; this fish weighed 11lb 4oz and was caught by Mr Nick stubbs of Hereford.
John Miller of Uppingham fished a Roach fry pattern on a Di 7 line and caught a new record Brown trout at the fishery in October 2011, a super fish that weighed 13lb.

| Rules and Etiquette | | | | | | All Anglers | | | - Catch and release means exercising care and consideration as well as respect for your quarry. In order to do this please.
- Use barbless hooks.
- Use wet hands with minimal handling of fish.
- Do not remove fish from the water.
- Use a fine mesh net (micro-mesh).
- Use a catch and release tool.
- Hurry the fish to the net: do not play it for any length of time as lactic acid levels will build and the fish may die.
- Beached fish must not be returned to the water.
- If a fish is bleeding from the gills, it’s only fair that it is despatched. Chances are it will not survive.
- If you intend to release your fish, don’t use static boobies or a sinking line. A deep hooked fish is unlikely to survive.
- Do not release near weed. A stressed fish will often look for cover and become entangled.
- Bag limits must be strictly observed – refer to Permits.
- You must only use artificial flies. However if you are dapping you can also use natural flies.
- Anglers are allowed to fish with one rod only.
- Anglers must not use keep nets, floats, spinners, plugs, spoons or any form of groundbait.
- No live or dead baits.
- Anglers must not gut, scale or clean fish into the reservoir or onto the banks. There is no gutting facility at the fishery.
You must only use artificial flies. However if you are dapping you can also use natural flies.
