Another good week for both bank and boat anglers with good quality fish being taken from all areas.

The English Disabled Fly Fishers Association held a match on Wednesday 8 May.  19 anglers enjoyed a good day, catching 47 fish.  Steve Cranston won the match with 19lb 6oz with 8 fish.  The strong winds kept anglers confined to the Small Half but despite the buffeting all anglers caught.

The recent strong winds have restricted bank anglers but despite this anglers are catching well but settled weather would be appreciated.

Week ending 6th }

Fish week 627 (season 2,524) Returns 160(805) Rod average 3.9 (3.1)

Pitsford Water has fished very well this week with a healthy rod average of 3.9.  Season ticket holder Pat Flynn is flying!  Pat has caught and returned 49 trout this week, taking 37 last week.  The best fish of the week was a lovely Rainbow of 6lb taken by Alan Urquhart whilst fishing with buzzers on a midge tip.

Both boat and bank anglers are recording good numbers of fish.  The boat anglers have recorded good numbers of fish in Brixworth Bay, the Narrows, and North Farm Bay.  Bank anglers are enjoying their best sport in Duffers, Stilton, Pig Stream, Gorse and Sailing Club.  The best methods are floating or intermediate lines with damsel patterns teamed with buzzers.

Fish week 586 (season 1,897) Returns 193(645) Rod average 3.0 (2.9)

Anglers are enjoying some good quality consistent fishing at Pitsford Water with lots of fish around the 4-5lb mark.  Season ticket holders Pat Flynn and Brian Coleman had a good day bringing 26 fish to their boat using sunk line tactics, while Graham Pearson and boat partner Bob Church reported having 11 good fish.  Gary How has reported taking several good fish up to 5lb.

The best areas for the boat anglers are Gorse, Stone Barn and the Pines.  Bank anglers have had mixed fortunes mainly due to the weather and variable winds.  Some have reported fish into double figures with others struggling for a brace.  Best bank areas are Cliffs, Gorse and Duffers.  Many anglers have said that there are some fantastic buzzer hatches in the evening.  Try buzzer and bloodworm if conditions allow, or alternatively intermediate lines and small lures in black and green or damsel imitations.

Competition news

The England Fly Fishing Association held a Spring Members Day with 29 anglers catching 116 fish for a rod average of 4.0.  Top rod on the day was Peter de Kremer with 8 fish for 23lb 3oz.  Ray Jenkins had the best fish, a fine Rainbow of 4lb 9oz with Mick Stevens close behind with a fish of 4lb 7oz.

Fish week 529 (season 1,311) Returns 174(452) Rod average 3.0 (2.9)

The improved weather conditions and change in wind direction have resulted in Pitsford’s trout waking up and beginning to feed.  There have been reports of large bags of fish from all around the water.

Anglers have been catching as many as 20-30 fish on teams of buzzers and bloodworm and spoonings of fish have revealed large numbers of bloodworm, black and green buzzers.

Ed Smith caught and returned a pristine Brown estimated between 8 and 9lb.  Ed, who fished a plain cruncher, was bank fishing in Stone Barn Bay and commented that this was by far the best condition Brown he had seen.

Boat anglers continue to find fish around the margins with the best areas being the Pines, Brixworth Bay and the Causeway.

The best fish of the week went to Mick Foster, a fine Rainbow of 8lb 10oz.

With the recent improvement in weather conditions anglers are enjoying some good fishing at Pitsford Water.  Over 10,000 fish have been stocked to date and it will only take a slight rise in temperature to get the fish on the feed and anglers will have a bonanza.

There have been many limits from the bank with Duffers, Stilton, Bog Bay, and the Cliffs all producing.  The best methods from the bank have been intermediates with black and green lures or black buzzer.  Boat anglers have also been taking good bags of fish with several overwintered specimens in the 4-5lb bracket.  The best boat areas are the Causeway down to Stone Barn and the Pines.

Peter Hartley, Anglian Water’s Head Coach, took four Beginners out to fish the bank at Stone Barn and was delighted that everyone on the course caught a fish, including one gentleman who had a nice Rainbow of 4lb 12oz – not bad for a first trout!

Fish week season 102 (season 445) Returns 35 (147) Rod average 2.9 (3.0)

Anglers who have braved the weather conditions (ice covering the Small Half first thing most mornings) have been rewarded with fish from both bank and boat.  Alan Worley took six nice fish from the bank whilst fishing a booby.  John Fletcher had fish from the North Shore on midge tip and black buzzer.  Boat anglers Stephen Smith and his partner caught seven fish and an angler fishing from a single man boat caught four fish including a good specimen of nearly 6lb.

Fish are still deep and are being taken on sinking lines with boobies or on intermediate lines with a weighted fly on the point.  The best fly colours are black and green or white and green with flies fished slowly.

Best Brown             3lb 8oz (returned).

Best boat areas         Narrows, Causeway Car Park to Gorse Bank.

Fish week season 154 (season 343) Returns 70 (112) Rod average 2.2 (3.1)

During the early part of last week, in better weather, both bank and boat anglers enjoyed good sport with lots of over wintered trout to the 3-4lb mark.

Local anglers Mick Frost, Alan Worley, Dick Osbourne and Terry Pancoust have been catching fish daily.  Chris Butcher, a member of the Retail Team at Pitsford Lodge, took 21 fish from the Cliffs, including a rare Blue.  Most fish are coming to a Di5 on boobies, cats whisker and Pitsford Pea.  One angler caught well from Stone Barn on a diawl bach on a midge tip.  Several hardy souls braved blizzard conditions last Saturday and caught off the bank, roll on Summer!

The 10lb 4oz Rainbow landed by Pete Cousins at Pitsford this week more than made up for the unkind wintry start to the new season.  Pete took this fine specimen from the Gravels with a black/green on an intermediate.

Nick Nicholson fished the Creek and had some lovely overwintered Rainbows of 5lb 6oz and 3lb 4oz.  A lovely Brown of 7lb was also caught and returned.
