Week ending 6th May 800x600 Fish week 1671(season 5,760) Returns 327 (1141) Rod average 5.11 (5.04) The excellent season at Grafham Water continues with 25 per cent of anglers taking their limits this week. Fish are feeding on buzzers with the best patterns proving to be small nymphs and buzzers down to size 14. Diawl bachs and crunchers fished deep are proving successful. Midge tip lines or blobs and boobies fished on sinking lines – Di3,Di5 or Di7.
The winning pair was GWFFA's Kevin Appleton and Mick Hill. Starting on blobs and DI7's at the west end of the reservoir they soon headed eastward trying several areas before joining the boats at the Willows. There were lots of fish here, but proving difficult to tempt. As the boats dispersed Kevin and Mick found the fish were higher in the water than expected, and were soon building quality bag limits. Second placed Chris Bobby and Brian Frith were also at the Willows but found the fish on floating lines and buzzers from the start, amassing their 8 fish limits by mid afternoon. In third place was the experienced pair of Gordon Alleyne and John Weaver. This pair favoured the quieter more sheltered south where they nymphed out their 15 fish. Steve Ellerbeck and John Roberts took 4th place, again from the Willows area on pulling tactics. The on form Chris Lane was the top individual rod. Chris fished a DI7 on the North shore. The best fish of the match was a stunning Rainbow of 5lb 6oz taken by Des Glovern. Best Brown 5lb 9oz Bob Wallinger of Hinckley.

Week ending 28th April. Fish week 1,163 (season 4,089) Returns 198 (814) Rod average 5.87 (5.02) Grafham Water has fished very well this week with an excellent rod average of 5.87 and with 45% of anglers catching their limits.
Boat anglers have had the best of the sport with G Buoy, Gaynes Cove, South Dam and the Stumps being the most productive areas. The best methods for the boat anglers have been either floating or sink tip lines with black buzzers or crunchers, diawl bachs and montanas, also fast sink lines with blobs, cats whisker or viva boobies and diawl bachs.
Bank anglers have found the fishing a little on the challenging side this week due to the brisk westerly winds that make finding fishable spots very limited. However, Gaynes Cove, South Dam and the Harbour have all produced some great sport. The main tactics for the bank anglers have been floating lines with black buzzers and crunchers, damsel nymphs, vivas and montanas fished slowly.
Lexus European Individual Qualifier 26 April. 17 Anglers achieved a rod average of 5.94 with the top four qualifying for the final. week ending 21st April Fish week 849 (season 2,926) Returns 197 (616) Rod average 4.3 (4.75) Grafham Water has fished very well this week with an excellent rod average of 4.3.
Bank anglers have had a good week’s sport even with the high winds that were experienced earlier in the week. The most productive methods for the bank anglers have been floating or sink tip lines with black crunchers, montanas, black buzzer and cats whisker booby fished slowly. The main areas for the bank anglers have been Gaynes Cove, South Dam, Harbour Arms and G bank.
Boat anglers have also enjoyed good sport this week on a variety of methods. Floating or sink tip lines with black buzzers, black crunchers, Pitsford Pea and cormorants, also fast sink lines with orange blobs, cats whisker booby, black buzzers and humungus booby have had consistent catch rates. The main areas for the boat anglers have been Valley Creek, Savages Creek, G, Q and A Buoys, Sanctuary Bay, South Dam and Point of Gaynes Cove.
Competition news Troutmasters fish off 20 April Rob Edmunds won this year’s fish off which was a bank only match. Robert caught 8 fish for 18lb 6oz; he will now go on to represent Grafham Water in the final which will be held at Grafham Water on Monday 2 September.

Week ending 7th April Fish week 713 (1461 season) Returns 123 (288) Rod average 5.79 (5.09) With a change in the weather over the weekend large numbers of anglers have enjoyed some good fishing at Grafham Water. The fish are still in fairly close to the bank so the bank anglers along the North shore are having good sport. The fish are lying quite deep at around 8 – 10 feet down, with the best flies being lures in black and green.
Boat anglers are also enjoying good sport in the same areas along the north shore as well as the Seat and Q buoy.
If the weather continues to warm up the buzzer fishing will start with a vengeance, there have already been some small hatches on the warmer days.

Peter Oldham, a member of Invicta Fly Fishers, caught the biggest Rainbow of the week, a cracking overwintered fish of 4lb 8oz. Gordon Swain, from Co Durham, caught the heaviest bag of the week taking 8 fish for 23lb 7oz. Gordon boat fished from the Seat, Gaynes Cove and the Willows using a sinking line with small black lures.
One of the highlights of the week, and the season so far, was the very successful Youth Development Day organised by England Youth Flyfishing in conjunction with the Angling Trust. This was hosted at Grafham Water on Easter Saturday, 30th March. The following account is written by Simon Le Hane one of the dedicated mentors who accompanied the youngsters out on the boats at Grafham Water.
“The development day for novice and intermediate anglers was planned to be in two distinct halves. The session before lunch was classroom based with some casting tuition on the bank, whilst the afternoon was a practical boat fishing trip which was one on one with a mentor.
As parents, students and mentors arrived at Grafham Lodge for the 9.30am start, the day was overcast, cold and with a steady 14mph wind from the north east. Everybody had been warned to dress correctly for the near zero temperatures, so it was no surprise to see varied trapper hats and ski clothes on display.
The students headed to the warmth of the class room tutorial with instructor Allan Sefton, while the mentors grabbed fishing kit and headed out in fishing boats to locate the fish shoals for the afternoon session. The day was tailored to the individual’s previous experience. The programme covered equipment necessary, rods, reels, lines and flies as well as how to tackle up and how to tie knots. The session then covered ‘what makes a trout tick’ as well as trout behaviour, biology of the trout and gutting your catch!
The mentors all returned to the lodge in time to take their students onto the water at 12.30. Better still all mentors seemed in a positive mood as they greeted their pupils and discussed the tactics that had caught them fish in the morning. The mentor / student pairings took to the water and most boats headed to the north shore of the reservoir. It was at the’ top of wind’ and the wave was more of a ripple, it even felt a coat warmer than the boat dock!
Boats spread from Cove Point, past G buoy, Marlow Bay and the Willows and started to fish. The mentors had mostly decided that it would be more productive for the students to fish at anchor because the fish were close to the bottom.
My student, Joshua Clayton, was happy enough to set up his own tackle and tied on his own fly. It was only during conversation that I realised his father was the head fishery warden at Pitsford reservoir!
Grafham Water continued
I carefully motored the boat into Marlow Bay near the jetty and ‘dropped the hook’ in about ten feet of water. We had both put on fast sinking lines and I had chosen a Black n Green booby tadpole on the point with a Cat’s whisker on the dropper, while Joshua had chosen an Orange blob. I was immediately impressed with the reasonable distance that Joshua could cast, my job to get him catching fish had just become a lot easier, hurray!
A couple of casts and I caught a fish on the black n green and it was quickly followed by another. I suggested that Joshua alter his retrieve to the ‘roly poly’ and change his fly colour. He quickly tied on one of my black n greens, cast out and successfully hooked a fish. He played the rainbow and netted it proficiently. After high fives and smiles he cast again eager to get another.
The weather was dramatic at times with snow storms sweeping across the reservoir and then you would bask in sunshine but there was always the ever present wind chill keeping the temperature near zero.
Joshua had caught his first Graham fish, he went on to catch his largest ever trout (3lb 7oz) and his most fish in a day (7) and I was ‘well chuffed’.
Back at the boat dock there were lots of happy students and proud mentors, more friendships had been forged from the common love for fly fishing. It was clear that all the mentors had only one aim of the day and that was that their students caught fish and they all did, the largest of the day being a 5lb 8oz rainbow caught by Harry Mason. Even three complete beginners to fly-fishing Joshua and Alex Hoxey-Smith and Alex Farley all caught their first Grafham trout.
Martin Matthews from Norwich caught 6 trout with his largest being 4lb 11oz. Most youngsters kept 2 of their fish carefully returning the rest for another day. Huge thanks to everyone who assisted to make the experience for these youngsters a successful one.”

Fish week 340 Returns 67 Rod average 5.07 Grafham Water is fishing exceptionally well with a rod average of 5.07. 25% of the fish caught are weighing over 3lb. K Hughes from Essex took the best fish of the week – a 6lb 10½oz Rainbow. D Wright took the best bag of the week with 8 fish for 22lb 8oz. Both bank and boat anglers are enjoying good sport despite the weather.
35 anglers fished a police match hosted by Grafham during the week. There were 6 limits and no blanks for a rod average of 5.2.
The best boat areas are G Buoy, Willows, North Dam and Pylon Point. Sinking lines fished deep and slow with black/green Pitsford Pea, Montanas, dog nobblers, cormorants or GRHEs all seem to be effective. Bank anglers are finding floating intermediate lines with black/green are working along with the same methods as boat anglers. The best bank areas are the Willows, G bank, North Dam and Gaynes Cove.

Dave, who fishes for Orvis Team Rutland and now lives in Southampton, was fishing from a boat off G Buoy. He hooked this huge Rainbow on a 12 foot leader of Orvis Mirage 2x fluorocarbon and a Di 7 competition line. The fish won Dave the New Lodge Trophy for best fish on Opening Day.
The new season at Grafham Water began last Friday where 2012 ended with plenty of good quality over wintered fish showing. Retired detective Dave Summers, 51, got off to a cracking start landing the best fish on the day - a stunning 8lb 2oz overwintered Rainbow. Dave, who fishes for Orvis Team Rutland and now lives in Southampton, was fishing from a boat off G Buoy. He hooked this huge Rainbow on a 12 foot leader of Orvis Mirage 2x fluorocarbon and a Di 7 competition line. Dave says “We took the boat out at 9am and headed off to the G buoy area as the wind direction was good for a drift there.”
“We pulled over to the left and threw the drogue out. It was really windy and the water was coloured up so I put on a Di7 competition special and a home tied black and green tadpole on a 12 foot leader.” Dave had a Rainbow of about 3lb on the first drift and on the second drift he hooked into the ‘biggy’.
“There was a hairy moment when the fish came to the surface and I realised how big it was and I wondered if it would fit into the landing net! ……The big trout took me about five minutes to land…”
Dave was awarded the New Lodge Trophy for the biggest fish landed on Opening Day.
Sunday saw the first of the rising fish in the warmer spells of the day which looks good for the coming season already. The rod average for the opening weekend was 4.54 with plenty of quality rainbows in excess of 3lb. Grafham Water Grafham Water continues to fish exceptionally well for the time of season. Both bank and boat anglers have recorded 45% of the trout weighing 3lb or over. The biggest trout of the week was caught by season ticket holder James Day, a fin perfect Rainbow of 6lb 13oz which he caught on a shrimp pattern from Pylon Point. The boat fishing season at Grafham has now been extended to Sunday 16 December – subject to weather conditions. Boat numbers will be limited so please call the lodge on 01480 810531 to check for availability. Boat anglers have enjoyed good sport mainly by fishing floating lines with shrimp patterns, GRHE, minkies, cats whiskers, black and green lures and crunchers. The main areas for boat anglers this week have been Hill Farm, Pig Bay, Pylon Point, Hedge End, G Buoy and Sludge Bank. Bank anglers have had a good week’s fishing mainly by fishing the points along the northern bank. Floating lines with shrimp patterns, GRHE, minkies and diawl bachs have all produced good fishing with Pylon Point, Hill Farm, Hedge End and G Buoy consistent areas.

Fish week 514(season 16,291) Returns 139(4,396) Rod average 3.69(3.70) Highly respected fly fisherman Bob Church of Northampton writes about his recent experiences fly fishing for pike at Grafham Water. “My recent trip to Grafham was not for trout this time, but for Zander and Pike. Mike Green and I use specified deep sunk tackle for reaching the bottom. i.e. the fastest sinking fly line and flies 4 to 6 inches long.
We had fished from a boat all morning then on the strike of noon I hooked into a big fish which I knew straight away was no zander. It was in fact a perfect specimen pike which was duly boated, but only after several long runs that took a full fly line and half of the backing off the reel. It weighed 22lb 8oz; and was quickly photographed and returned. I was over the moon and cast out again. My first pull of my retrieving hand and I hooked up with yet another big fish. I knew this time that it was a zander as I was getting the up and down fight from the bottom in a depth of 28 feet. It weighed 10lb 8oz. Eventually we got him in - this was also a perfect specimen. I wouldn't mind betting that neither fish had ever seen a hook before. I have fished at Grafham since it opened in June 1966. Anglers have enjoyed an excellent week at Grafham Water with the biggest fish of the season a 9lb 3 7/8oz Rainbow falling to David Hoppe. David, from Stoke on Trent, was doing an article on buzzer fishing for Total Fly Fisher magazine, when he caught a superb conditioned over wintered rainbow from Valley Creek on a black buzzer using a midge tip line. This was captured on camera by Cliff Waters of Fishypics.
The biggest bag and the biggest Brown of the week were caught by boat angler Bob Wallinger. Bob caught 8 fish for a cracking 32lb 7oz, with his best fish being a 4lb 9oz Brown. Bob caught these fish on a Di 7 line with a big silver sparkler whilst drifting between M and X buoys.
Graham Pearson, Captain of Rio Masters, finally captured the Bob Church Open Trophy, having finished as runner up on four different occasions. Graham won the match with 8 fish for 28lb 10½oz (including time bonus). After 30 minutes taking one fish drifting close to the bank in Hill Farm Bay, Graham moved to Pig Bay and switched to three buzzers under the bung which brought him seven fish in quick succession. Graham finished by 11.59am earning him a 12lb time bonus.
Lloyd Pallett took second place with 8 fish for 28lb 6 3/8oz and Chris Mcleod was third. There were plenty of quality over wintered fish with many more over 3lb plus and five over 4lb with Laurie Taylor of Scotland taking the best fish of the day – a Rainbow of 4lb15¾oz. Top lady rod was Joan Russell with 8 fish for 21lb 8oz.
