| Thornton Weekly update week ending 19/05/13 119 rods caught 357 trout for rod average 3.0 Good hatches of buzzer are providing good surface sport with the trout now spreading themselves throughout the reservoir. But as always some areas hold more fish than others, the farm bank lightly fished so far this year is now producing excellent catches. Thornton arm the wood and wood bank corner are still producing good sport as they have for a number of weeks. In the main a floating line with buzzer, diawl bach and damsel patterns have produced best with a midge tip or intermediate during the brighter conditions. Water clarity is excellent with our water temperature just under 12 degrees, a little cool for the time of year but 12 – 16 degrees is great for trout fishing. David Price caught a 4lb8oz rainbow, Jim Retallic caught 5lb14oz rainbow, M Needham 4lb rainbow, with a good number of trout 3lb+ showing again this week On the warmer evenings we are seeing a good evening rise our last 4 hour permit £10.00 1 fish kill+ catch & release with boat for £4.00 offers excellent value to fish the evening rise. Highlight of this week has been the good number of browns up to 2lb+ been recorded with the majority been returned. Member Tony Lorrimer recorded 12 browns to 2lb+ returning them all. These were fish stocked way back in January and are feeding well on the natural food. Floating lines with damsel, diawl bach & buzzers are catching best with anglers starting to catch fish from other parts of the reservoir, with green bay & stone bank fishing well this week. On the warmer evening we are starting to see an evening rise. Rod average so far this week is 4.6 excellent considering the strong winds we encountered during the early part of the week, winds which restricted the fishing to the Thornton arm. Today, Saturday, we have light southerly winds with boats spread across the reservoir. To book boats or receive the latest news call the lodge 01530 230807 Ifor Thornton weekly report week ending 14/04/2013 Continues to improve as does the weather, and not before time, with 112 rods last week catching 592 trout for rod average 5.3 With our water temperature at long last on the way up, nearly 8 degrees this morning more & more fish are feeding on the buzzer. It shouldn’t be too long before the trout start spreading themselves throughout the reservoir and if the temperature, air & water, continue to rise we should soon see the first evening rise of the season. For last week anglers continue to concentrate their efforts along the shallows of the Thornton arm, wood & woodbank corner with the welcome southerly wind a tad too strong to fish down along the Markfield arm. As soon as the wind drops expect the farm bank to fish especially for the bank angler. Intermediate & floating lines best with fritz damsel, cats whisker, buzzer. We seeing fish starting to feed on the buzzer, although currently small buzzers its certainly a sign better conditions have arrived. Floating lines, intermediate and sinkers fished with booby, cats whisker, dawson olive, bloodworm, hares ear and buzzer all worked with the bank opposite the lodge still a favourite fishing spot. Some anglers on the southerly wind ventured into the Markfield arm and found fish all the way along it, in a “normal” year the farm bank always fishes well in April. With the local weather forecast not too bad for this week sport we expect to continue to be as good as this weeks rod average 5.1 indicates. It must be as frustrating to you the anglers as it is to me as a fishery manager that sport currently is excellent but the weather forecast is keeping rods away. However on this mornings BBC forecast they are at last giving an improvement this morning it certainly feels less cold. Our rod average this week is 5.1 with anglers continuing to catch along the bank opposite the lodge, wood and wood corner, not surprising as this is the sheltered bank. Nick Coomry fished Thornton for the first time catching and returning 15 trout off the bank, another first time visitor Phil Haney also managed 5 from the bank. Intermediate and sinking lines with yellow booby, cats whisker, green pea and diawl bach were the most successful methods. Somebody needs to tell the weather it’s officially Spring!
Another week when the cold weather has kept anglers off the bank & out of the boats with only 32 rods fishing, they did however attain a rod average of 3.9. Good sport considering the conditions. With the water temperature struggling to get past 5 degrees its not surprising a fast sinking line with booby, blobs, cats whiskers and tadpoles caught the majority of the trout. Best area continues to be the bank opposite the lodge, wood, wood bank corner, not surprising as these areas provide the shelter from the cold easterly winds
Thornton site remains closed as the access hill by the main gate & public car park is one sheet of ice with the pontoon & boats also iced up this morning.

As you would expect sinking lines with booby, blobs & cat whisker patterns are catching the majority but an intermediate has also worked with a fritz damsel with some rods taking fish on buzzers. With a good head of fish in the reservoir our good sport should continue, dont forget Easter falls on the 29th March get your boat bookings in early 01530 230807 Ifor Fishing report week ending 10/03/2013. Ifor 01530 230807 Thornton End Of Season Report Thornton 2012 season closed on November 18th, work is already underway preparing the fishery for the 2013 season which gets underway on 1st February 2013 As with every fishery in the UK the weather during 2012 has been the talking point, we went from no rain in 2011 & low reservoir levels which continued into the early part of 2012 with water levels 10ft down at one stage. Mid April 2012 it all changed, with nothing but constant rain which saw the reservoir at its full level & running over the overflow continuously as it continuous to be. Our buzzer hatches, or more to the point, the lack of them was the one big disappointment with little or no evening rise. Anglers still caught but had to resort for most of the season to intermediate or sinking lines. As the reservoir filled and flooded once again the exposed banks it was interesting how differently Thornton fished from previous years with the trout remaining on the shallows over the newly flooded banks and did not move out into the deeper water as we would have expected. Quality of fish caught again this year was excellent with fish often averaging 2lb in weight, with a good sprinkling of 3lb – 5lb trout taken every week with John Gunby taking a rainbow of 7lb during the last week of the season. Overall a total of 11,228 trout caught for the year resulting in a fishery rod average 2.5 Looking forward to 2013 we will have a full reservoir to start the season, our stock fish are on order with a pre season stocking of 2,500 – 3,000 due to go in to ensure a good start, with opening day falling on Friday 1st February call the lodge to book a boat for opening day Can I take this opportunity to thank you for your support & wish you all a happy festive season & a prosperous new year Ifor Thornton weekly report week ending 11th November 2012 During the past week 66 rods caught 121 trout for 1.8 rod average.
